Terengganu International Squid Jigging Festival 2014

Surprisingly, almost every dinner, Terengganu Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Dato’ Seri Ahmad Said and/or his State Exco for Tourism Dato’ Mohd Jidin Shafie joined in our meal, chatting with delegates, receiving feedback from various perspectives.
All in all, it was a one-of-a-kind press trip, where we had the opportunity to relive the age-old tradition of “fishing for squids” using a line and hook only, which surprisingly, some fishermen are still using and despite this traditional way, can still bring in more than a hundred squids per outing on favourable nights.
We were able to mingle with the locals, and get hands-on experience in local crafts such as weaving with mengkuang leaves, songket weaving and batik printing.
And to wrap up a week-long familiarisation trip to Terengganu and celebrate awesome friendships forged, we were treated to a scrumptious meal hosted by the Menteri Besar at his official residence, Seri Iman, on our final night in the state.
Prizes were presented to those who caught the longest squids, the ones with the biggest hauls, best videography, top Instagrammers and even to the one who was the first to get knocked out by seasickness. This honour went to Malaysia’s Dominic Loke! Congratulations to all winners.
As for me, my tally stands at three squid jigging outings for zero squid! Well, at least I was consistent in every outing, right??
The many photos and their captions I am sharing in this post will give you a visual gist of our trip.
