Vsuka Kopitiam Ipoh: A Gem for Vegetarian Foodies

If you think vegetarian food is all about green leaves, tofu, and the occasional plate of fried noodles, Vsuka Kopitiam in Ipoh might just change your mind.

Located behind Intan Business Centre, Vsuka Kopitiam has been serving vegetarian food for over two years. Despite having been around for over two years, this little eatery remains something of a hidden gem. We would probably have taken much longer to find it if not for a recommendation from one of our followers!

A Vegetarian Kopitiam with a Nanyang Touch

Vsuka Kopitiam offers vegetarian food in a casual Nanyang-style kopitiam setting. To be clear, Vsuka serves vegetarian food, not vegan.

Think of the familiar kopitiam dishes we grew up enjoying, except that they are prepared without meat. From kai see hor fun, wan tan mee, curry mee and pan mee to nasi lemak, toast, sandwiches and burgers, the menu brings together a variety of local favourites.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to chat with the founder, Mr Derek. He shared that the idea behind Vsuka is to recreate the familiar flavours and experience of kopitiam dining, but with vegetarian alternatives.

Offhand, we really cannot think of another Nanyang-style kopitiam in Ipoh that focuses entirely on vegetarian food. Do let us know if you have come across one!

Vegetarian Food Beyond Religious Practices

For many years, vegetarian dining was commonly associated with religious practices. While that remains an important reason for many people, the way we approach vegetarian food today has certainly evolved.

Some people choose vegetarian meals for personal preferences, others for health reasons, and some simply enjoy exploring different cuisines.

Just as we might crave Thai, Japanese, or Korean food on different occasions, vegetarian food can also be another delicious option when deciding what to eat.

And honestly, we think places like Vsuka make it much easier for people to explore vegetarian dining without feeling that they are missing out on their favourite dishes.

Familiar Kopitiam Favourites Reimagined

For our first visit, we decided to follow the chef’s recommendations and try some of Vsuka’s signature dishes. After all, when you are visiting a new eatery for the first time, the chef’s recommendations are usually a good place to start.

The food arrived, and we were pleasantly surprised by the flavours and portion sizes. The dishes were satisfying, with generous servings that made the meal feel worth the visit.

One thing we particularly appreciate is that the food does not feel like a compromise. You are not simply eating vegetarian because you have decided to skip meat for the day. You are there because the food itself is enjoyable.

And if we had to choose one standout dish from everything we tried, our vote would go to the signature curry noodles. That bowl deserves a special mention! The curry was flavourful, and the dish had enough character to make us want to return for another serving. In fact, it was so satisfying that we reckon even those who are usually more inclined towards meat-based dishes would enjoy it.

Come to think of it, you might not even realise that you are eating vegetarian. It was that good!

A Kopitiam Meal Must Come with Kopi!

Of course, since we were at a kopitiam, we had to accompany our dishes with kopi. After all, what is a proper kopitiam meal without a cup of coffee to go with it, right?

There is something comforting about enjoying a familiar local meal with a cup of kopi on the side. It is a simple combination, but one that never seems to go out of style.

Whether you are dropping by for lunch, a casual meal with friends, or simply craving a bowl of curry noodles, the kopitiam setting makes Vsuka a relaxed place to enjoy your food.

With prices around RM15 for a satisfying meal, Vsuka Kopitiam is also a casual dining option for those who want to enjoy vegetarian food without splurging.

It is also worth noting that traditional vegetarian food has sometimes been criticised for relying heavily on fried ingredients. At Vsuka, however, there seems to be a conscious effort to offer more variety, rather than relying solely on deep-fried alternatives

From Chow Yang Vegetarian Restaurant to Vsuka Kopitiam

Interestingly, Vsuka Kopitiam is the younger sister of Chow Yang Vegetarian Restaurant in Bercham. Chow Yang has been in business for around 20 years and offers Chinese vegetarian cuisine in a traditional round-table dining setting.

The two establishments may share the same vegetarian philosophy, but their dining concepts are quite different. While Chow Yang is more suited to Chinese-style dining with family and friends, Vsuka brings vegetarian food into the familiar, casual atmosphere of a Nanyang kopitiam.

Both establishments also offer vegetarian catering and buffet services upon request. Depending on the occasion, customers can opt for Chinese, local or fusion-style menus to suit their event.

This is particularly useful for gatherings where vegetarian food is required, whether for family celebrations, corporate functions or other occasions.

Frozen Vegetarian Food for Home Cooking

Another interesting aspect of the business is that the company manufactures most of its own vegetarian ingredients and meat alternatives. These in-house products are marketed under its own frozen food brand, Chef Yang.

This gives the company greater control over its ingredients while allowing it to develop products suited to its menu. At Vsuka’s shopping zone, customers can browse a selection of frozen vegetarian food, including Chef Yang products as well as items sourced from other suppliers.

It is a convenient option for those who prefer to prepare vegetarian meals at home, with plenty of choices to stock up on. As for us, we malas nak masak! We’d rather leave the cooking to them and enjoy our vegetarian fix at the kopitiam!

Finding Vsuka Kopitiam

If you are planning a visit, here’s a useful tip: use Rooftop Restaurant and Bar as your landmark. The surrounding roads can be rather confusing, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. With the one-way traffic system apparently changed earlier this year, it is easy to find yourself going round in circles, just as we did.

So, save the location on Google Maps before heading over. It will make your journey a whole lot easier!
