Squid Jigging @ Pulau Kapas, Terengganu
While visiting Terengganu recently, off we went on a squid jigging (candat sotong) trip, one of the most popular activities to indulge in while in this East Coast state.
Travelling for an hour in a fishing boat, about 8km from Marang Jetty heading towards Pulau Kapas, my group of eight plus a boat crew of two men started trying for squid at about 8.30pm.
As soon as our captain put the bait into the sea, off Pulau Kapas in South China Sea, he managed to get two squids. That seriously fired up our enthusiasm, and we each took hold of our equipment to try our luck as well.
Everyone on my boat managed to catch at least one squid in the two hours we were allocated, but I did not get anything, squid or otherwise. Yup, squid jigging, or generally, fishing, requires plenty of patience and luck.
Squids are prevalent at about ten feet below sea level from 8.30pm to 3am, in the months of April and May. Although we were there in June, overall, my group still managed a sizeable catch. At the end of the activity, one of our crewmen fried a few squids while on the vessel. The squids were sweet and succulent, even without additional ingredients.
