Nasi Padang Salero Puchong: Authentic Minang Flavours with Plenty to Choose From
If you are looking for authentic Minang dishes served Padang-style in Puchong, Nasi Padang Salero is a solid go-to.
The first thing to know, though, is that finding this place can be part of the adventure. Unlike the typical nasi Padang restaurant sitting along a busy commercial stretch, Nasi Padang Salero is located in a kampung area in Puchong. If you are unfamiliar with the surroundings, you could easily wonder whether your GPS has taken you down the wrong road. It has not.
Look out for familiar landmarks such as One Puchong, Putra Heights and Kampung Baru Puchong, and keep an eye out for the Petronas station nearby. Once you arrive, you will find a neighbourhood eatery along the roadside.
Nasi Padang Salero Puchong has only been open for about five months, yet is already attracting plenty of local diners. After seeing what comes out of the kitchen, it is not difficult to understand why.
Cooking the Minang Way
The kitchen of Nasi Padang Salero Puchong is led by a Minang husband-and-wife team, Helmi and Is – and that goes a long way towards explaining the food.

When we talk about nasi Padang, there is sometimes a tendency to use the term rather loosely. Here, however, the cooking is in the hands of Minang cooks themselves.
The couple brings considerable experience to the kitchen, and that expertise shows in the sheer number of dishes they prepare daily – all in traditional Minang technique and served Padang-style, allowing diners to enjoy the cuisine as it is meant to be relished.
It is rather like mixed rice at a Chinese kopitiam, except that the entire spread is Minang.

The Cooking Starts Early
The kitchen is already busy long before most of us are thinking about lunch.
Helmi and Is begin their day at around 5am, preparing the food that will go onto the counter by 8am, ready to be served.
On a typical day, diners can expect around 40 different dishes, with the selection changing according to what is prepared by the kitchen.
Several traditional favourites appear daily, while other dishes are rotated. So even if you become a regular customer, there is a good chance that you will continue finding something new to try.

With such a long list, it is easy to assume that several dishes must taste alike. That is where the fun begins.

Forty Versions of Different Flavours
A long food counter can sometimes be deceptive. When several gravies have similar colours, everything can look as though it belongs to one big pot. That is certainly not the case here. Some of the dishes may look similar at first glance, particularly when you see the yellowish gravies lined up side-by-side, but each has its own character. That variety comes from the use of different spices, cooking methods, and combinations of ingredients, without the use of MSG.
Two dishes that deserve a special mention are daun ubi and nangka, both of which are among the must-try choices if you spot them on the counter.
By the way, if you associate Padang food with dishes that are going to set your mouth on fire, there is another pleasant surprise here. No doubt, there are plenty of spicy-looking gravies, but the good news is that the food is not overwhelmingly hot.
During a Saturday visit, FB Live host Nizril spoke to a Chinese customer, who shared that he enjoys eating there and does not find the dishes excessively spicy.

Nizril’s collaboration partner, Fiq, had a similar observation. Some of the gravies may look rather fiery on the counter, but the actual heat is not overpowering.
That means you can appreciate the spices and depth of flavour without having to spend the entire meal reaching for a glass of water. Even children can enjoy some of the dishes, depending on their tolerance for spice.
Fiq also singled out the beef, noting that it is very tender. For a good rendang daging, the tender, juicy meat is certainly something to look forward to.
Freshly Cooked, Every Day
Despite being relatively new, Nasi Padang Salero Puchong has already developed a loyal following. Because the dishes move quickly, Nasi Padang Salero Puchong does not follow the practice of reheating leftover food and serving it again the following day. The philosophy here is quite straightforward: diners should be given food that the kitchen is proud to serve.
And with Helmi and Is starting work at 5am, there is plenty of time to get the day’s cooking done before opening at 8am.
It is a lot of work, particularly when the menu can stretch to around 40 dishes. But perhaps this is where experience really counts. The food is not simply about filling the counter. There is an obvious emphasis on making sure that diners enjoy what they have paid for. In short, satisfaction is guaranteed.
During Nizril’s Saturday visit, the eatery was vibrant, with customers dining in while P-hailers came and went to collect delivery orders.
He also spoke to several diners, including one lady who said that after being introduced to Nasi Padang Salero Puchong, she had returned every weekend. By then, she had already made it her weekend makan destination for four consecutive weekends.
Her reason was simple: she loved the flavours, and with so much variety available, she simply did not get bored. That is quite a strong endorsement for a restaurant that is still new.
Nasi Bungkus the Minang Way
Besides serving dine-in customers or online deliveries, Nasi Padang Salero Puchong also prepares nasi bungkus, which is a particularly convenient option when you want to take your meal home.
There is an interesting difference to the wrapped version too. You may find that you get more rice than a typical dine-in portion.
This follows a traditional Padang practice where nasi bungkus is brought home to be shared among family members, so the quantity is more generous.
And here is something else worth remembering. If you buy nasi bungkus, do not rush to open it. The trick is to leave the packet wrapped for at least 20 minutes before eating. As the food rests, the gravies have more time to mingle with the rice, allowing the flavours to seep through.
So if you have brought your nasi bungkus home, give it a little time before opening it. The wait is definitely worth it.
What Nizril and Fiq Tried
With so many choices available, deciding what to put on the plate was not easy for Nizril or Fiq. During their lunch at Nasi Padang Salero Puchong, they selected several dishes, including urat keting, rendang limpa, dendeng balado, udang peyek and siput sedut masak lemak.
It was a good selection, as they wanted to move beyond the usual nasi Padang staples and explore some of the more distinctive flavours.
The rendang limpa and dendeng balado showcase the meatier side of Minang cooking, while the udang peyek and siput sedut offer something quite different in terms of texture and flavour.
And with the dishes changing from day to day, there is always a reason to go back in the near future and see what will appear on the counter.
A Favourite Among Local Workers
Nasi Padang Salero Puchong has also found a ready audience among workers from the nearby Panasonic factory. With regular lunchtime crowds, Helmi and Is are already accustomed to cooking for plenty of hungry people at once.
That experience also means the team is equipped to handle catering orders, making the eatery an option to consider for those organising a gathering and want something beyond the common catering menu.
Meaning of “Salero”
Salero means selera, referring to one’s appetite and the pleasure of eating. It is an appropriate name for an eatery where the whole idea is to eat well, choose generously and enjoy the variety. So if you find yourself in Puchong with an appetite for authentic Minang flavours, you know where to go.
