YouTube Sensation S. Pavithra is First ‘Ipoh City Icon’
In a special ceremony yesterday, Buntong-born S. Pavithra has been recognised as the first of a hundred ‘Ipoh City Icon 2020’, by Ipoh City Mayor Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin.

Pavithra, along with her husband M. Sugu, who jointly manage the YouTube channel Sugu Pavithra, began sharing cooking videos in January, and shot to fame in March, as the country was locked down during the Movement Control Order (MCO) in a bid to break the chain of COVID-19 infection.

During the time, while Malaysians stayed safe at home, they found the cooking videos by the couple simple to follow and their recipes, easy to prepare. The duo’s channel has garnered almost 800,000 subscribers to date. Recently, they received the ‘Silver Play Button’ from YouTube, the first YouTube Creator Awards for reaching 100,000 subscribers.
In endorsing the City Council’s choice of Pavithra as the first ‘Ipoh City Icon’, Dato’ Rumaizi said that the main criterion to be selected is being an Ipohite. “Also, she has made a name on YouTube,” he added, as he presented the avid couple with a hamper and other gifts.

The Ipoh City Icon Award recognises Ipoh-born personalities who have made the city proud with their talents and successes, excelling in any field, skill or hobby.
It is good for her but the City should not forget to honour the rest who have sacrificed for the city as well.
With a target of 100 icons, I think there will be room for every significant Anak Ipoh. Hehe
