Grand Opening of Lao You Ji Food Court, Ipoh
It was an evening of celebration and merriment with the grand opening of Lao You Ji 老友記 Food Court in Bercham, Ipoh. The festivity began with the official opening event that included lion and dragon dances, setting off firecrackers to cover the grounds with a carpet of red paper for auspiciousness, as well as a customary ribbon cutting ceremony.
Invited guests were then ushered to take their seats for dinner and stage performances, with Hong Kong personality Wong Chui Ling alongside local artiste Danny One as emcees for the exciting occasion.
The interesting lineup of entertainment enthralled the guests, with special appearances by Wang Lei 王雷 and Ipohite Chu Mimi 朱咪咪, also the Szechuan art of face (mask) changing performed by XueFeng Mask King and his protege, Carmans.
Being Ipoh-born, Chu Mimi shared anecdotes of growing up in Ipoh and the street food she enjoyed eating. By popular demand, she sang two popular hits: Shanghai Bund and Friends to the delight of the audience.
15-year-old Carmans also rendered a couple of songs, showcasing his all-round talent as a stage performer.
Jordan Sam, the Michael Jackson of Asia, brought the house down with an eerily convincing impersonation of Michael Jackson, while belting out some of the biggest hits by the King of Pop, such as You Are Not Alone, Black or White, Smooth Operator, Dangerous and Billie Jean, amidst a spectacular stage production.
Lao You Ji Food Court’s resident 3-piece live band also performed on the big stage. Those who missed the chance to hear them last evening can head over to Lao You Ji Food Court every Thursday evening. The band is open to song requests, too.
Eat – Drink – Play – Win
While the stage shows were enjoyable, everyone was waiting for the lucky draw, organised in conjunction with the food court’s grand opening.
That’s not surprising, with more than RM50,000 worth of prizes to be won, including an air-conditioner, refrigerator, television set, motorcycle, and the grand prize of a brand new Proton Saga 1.3L saloon car.
Earlier in the evening, two batches of winners were drawn. They won My Voice karaoke cash vouchers worth RM300 each and pairs of VIP tickets to watch Jordan Sam’s “The One Concert” tribute to Michael Jackson at the Arena of Stars in Genting on 20th September, 2022.
With just a minimum spend of RM10 from the beverage counter per entry, the lucky draw attracted numerous participants, some of whom entered multiple times to increase their winning chances. The draw of lucky names got all of us at the edge of our seats, especially when absentees had their prizes forfeited.
In conclusion, the winner of the Proton Saga 1.3L car grand prize was a couple who are tenants of the food court. Just look at their bag of investments. Congratulations to them and all the other winners.
The festivity wrapped up with a colourful display of fireworks to light up the skies.
