Lions Club of Perak Silver State 18th Charter Anniversary & Charity Night
“With your heart, serve with the blessings of love;
With your eyes, serve with the vision of brotherhood;
With your mind, serve with pure thoughts;
With your words, serve to enlighten others;
and with your actions, serve to uplift the lives of others.
This is Service with Altruism.”
This was the summary of Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye’s keynote address, titled ‘Providing Exemplary Services to the Community’, which was delivered at the 18th charter anniversary-cum-charity night hosted by the Lions Club of Perak Silver State last evening.
Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye is the chairman of the National Alliance of Safe Community. His speech was based on his long experience in community service since the 1960s. Tan Sri Lee, nicknamed ‘the Typewriter Man’, shared that he woke up at 5am that morning to draft it, as it was an important mission to fulfil here in Ipoh.
All the guests received a certificate of attendance signed by Tan Sri Lee.
In conjunction with the 18th charter anniversary, the Lions Club of Perak Silver State took the opportunity to raise funds to support its various service projects, including environment protection, climate change mitigation, feeding the hungry, and senior care, among other humanitarian initiatives.
The target amount to raise at the event was RM20,000. Through the warm generosity of guests, a total of RM23,600 was collected. Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, as the guest of honour, also donated RM1000 to the cause. One of the targeted projects was buying school uniforms for 26 needy students at SJK (C) Chung Hwa Parit.
Pantai Hospital Ipoh donated 32 units of refurbished computers to SJK (C) Chung Hwa Parit, SK Raja Chulan, and SK Methodist Tanjong Rambutan.
Besides a cash donation, one of the guests, Mr Wong Kam Seng, CEO of Healthy City International Sdn. Bhd., also sponsored “Chinese New Year red packets” to the twenty elderly guests from two Ipoh senior citizen homes. Mr Wong was the first guest to purchase Tan Sri Lee’s book, ‘Call Lee Lam Thye’. He bought it at a price of RM1000. The amount was then donated to the Lions Club of Perak Silver State.
Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye was awarded the Meritorious Award by the Lions Club of Silver State for his Exemplary Service to the community over the past 60 years. Tan Sri Lee has received various accolades and awards over the years, including the Lions International Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2002, Tokoh Maal Hijrah in 2019, and Tokoh NGO Kebangsaan in 2014.
There were two cake-cutting ceremonies. One was for the 18th anniversary celebration of the Lions Club of Perak Silver State, while the other was for the January babies’ birthday celebration.
While enjoying an eight-course dinner, guests were entertained by Pertubuhan Kebudayaan dan Orkestra Cina with traditional Chinese music in conjunction with the Spring Festival, which falls on 10th February 2024.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony wrapped up the evening. The takeaway message from the joyful event by the Lions Club of Perak Silver State President, Dr Richard Ng, was: “You DO NOT have to be a Great Lion to provide exemplary service to the community. But as a Lion, you have to be Great by providing exemplary service to the community. This is the oath we all took and be guided by the slogan, “We Serve”. We do it for INTENTION and NOT for ATTENTION.”
