Grand Opening of Kwan Tak-hing Memorial Hall: A New Cultural Landmark in Ipoh Old Town

On 8th September 2024, the Perak Ku Kong Chow Association in Ipoh’s iconic Old Town unveiled the Kwan Tak-hing Memorial Hall, dedicated to the legendary martial artist and actor.

Located at 39, Jalan Panglima, this new cultural attraction highlights the life and legacy of Kwan Tak-hing, making the landmark a significant addition to Ipoh Old Town’s historical and tourist sites.

The opening day also saw the launch of the Kong Fu (功夫) Kopitiam situated on the ground floor, providing guests and visitors with a unique cultural and culinary experience.

Who Was Kwan Tak-hing?
Kwan Tak-hing, born in Guangdong, China, in 1905, was renowned for his role in Hong Kong movies as Wong Fei Hung, a Chinese folk hero and martial arts master.

Between the 1940s and 1980s, Kwan portrayed Wong Fei Hung in more than 70 films, making him synonymous with the legendary character. His martial arts prowess and on-screen presence turned him into a global icon, celebrated for his embodiment of justice, bravery, and the spirit of Chinese culture.

Kwan Tak-hing’s Connection to Ipoh
Sifu Kwan Tak-hing’s legacy is deeply connected to Ipoh, Malaysia, where he was a respected life member of the Perak Ku Kong Chow Association.

The opening of the Kwan Tak-hing Memorial Hall in Ipoh Old Town pays tribute to this enduring bond. With its rich cultural heritage and bustling charm, Ipoh Old Town now boasts this memorial as a new attraction for tourists and visitors, to delve into the life of a martial arts legend.

The Heroic Wong Fei Hung
Kwan Tak-hing’s most famous role was that of Wong Fei Hung, a real-life martial artist and physician known for defending the weak and upholding justice. Kwan’s portrayal of Wong Fei Hung in films popularised the character and made him a household name.

With his expert knowledge of Hung Gar kung fu, Kwan Tak-hing’s performances brought martial arts to life on screen. His dedication to this role over several decades solidified his reputation as a master of martial arts both on and off screen.

Kwan Tak-hing’s Achievements and Honours
Kwan Tak-hing was more than an actor. He was a skilled martial artist who performed many of his own stunts, and was instrumental in promoting Chinese martial arts worldwide.

In recognition of his contributions to cinema and martial arts, Kwan was awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II. This honour reflected his impact beyond the Chinese-speaking world, acknowledging his role in bridging cultures through the art of kung fu.

Special Guest: Sifu David Kwan Hon-chuen (關漢泉)
Adding to the significance of the grand opening was the presence of Kwan Tak-hing’s son, Sifu David Kwan Hon-chuen, who flew in from the United States.

Like his father, David Kwan is a distinguished martial artist and has contributed to the global promotion of Chinese martial arts. His presence at the event paid tribute to the lasting influence of the Kwan family in the world of kung fu and further emphasised the importance of preserving this rich cultural legacy.

Cultural Performances Highlight the Event
The grand opening was made even more spectacular with a series of cultural performances, including kung fu demonstrations and vibrant lion and dragon dances by the Persatuan Sukan Dan Kebudayaan Ma Ching Ipoh.

These performances celebrated the martial arts heritage of Kwan Tak-hing and enthralled the audience with displays of strength, agility, and tradition.

The dragon and lion dances, symbols of good fortune and prosperity, performed amidst the lighting up of red firecrackers, added a festive atmosphere to the occasion.

A Notable Gathering of Chinese Community Leaders
The event was graced by several prominent figures from the Chinese community, including Datuk Kwan Foh Kwai, President of the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall; and Datuk Ooi Foh Sing, President of the Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association.

Also in attendance were Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, Deputy President of MCA, and representatives from Ku Kong Chow Associations across Malaysia.

The ceremony was further enriched by the participation of 40 martial arts sifus and associations from Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Taiwan and the United States of America, a testament to Kwan Tak-hing’s international influence.

Of course, Perak Ku Kong Chow Association President Datuk Yik Phooi Hong was the host, alongside event organising chairperson Mr Ricky Soong Wei Chiew.

A New Attraction in Ipoh Old Town
The Kwan Tak-hing Memorial Hall, situated in the 1928 building, is now a key cultural landmark in Ipoh Old Town, offering visitors the chance to explore the life and legacy of a martial arts master who left an indelible mark on cinema and Chinese culture.
