Rendang Tok Mak Nik is not a new name for those who love the traditional spicy beef fare. Established by the late Pn. Hajjah Napsiah Yeop Abdullah (Mak Nik) in 1959, demand for Rendang Tok Mak Nik has seen a ten-fold increase this Ramadan and Syawal.

To cope with the sales, besides increasing their normal monthly consumption of 500 kg of meat to 5,000 kg, fifteen part-time workers were hired to assist their five full-time employees. Needless to say, it was a flurry of activity at the company’s original kitchen in Kampung Pasir Putih, Ipoh.

Although there are many “Rendang Tok” producers who claim to be the “best”, Mak Nik is said to be the original, as this was a Perak Royal dish and Mak Nik was a cook in the palace a long time ago.

In the early days, Mak Nik and husband Mohamed Pandak Hussein sold her famous Rendang Tok at pasar tani in and around Ipoh. With encouraging demand from customers, they decided to expand their business and established their company.

Since then, not only does the company produce and market Rendang Tok Mak Nik, a wide range of traditional food products is also manufactured and sold. Nevertheless, Rendang Tok remains the most popular product to date.

The business is now managed by Mak Nik’s fifth child, Shariffudin Mohamed, but his seven siblings all hold varying roles within the enterprise.

According to Shariffudin, they have another production plant. It is in Taiping, exclusively for export to Dubai and the Philippines, just to name a couple of countries. Mak Nik may have passed away three years ago but her brand name lives on.

  1. I never knew that it takes so many people & so much effort to produce rendang. Hopefully I’ll be able to try this soon. Recently being overseas has piqued my interest for Malaysian food.

  2. Looks interesting. Never heard of ketupat palas but it looks like Thai pandan leaf chicken.
