Tasik Cermin Doline Geosite: Tasik Cermin 1

Tasik Cermin Ipoh, designated as a geopark by the Perak state government, is a hidden gem in Gunung Rapat Ipoh, near the North-South Expressway (NSE). This picturesque destination, said to be 480 – 250 million years old (Ordovician – Permian), offers a range of attractions and activities focused on nature and adventure. Two major highlights here are Tasik Cermin 1 and Tasik Cermin 2.

Tasik Cermin Doline Geosite’s history is one of transformation and redemption. Originally an iron ore mine, the Perak state government initiated its transformation into Malaysia’s First Eco Adventure Quarry Park. The park showcases shimmering mirror lakes, towering cliffs, plus lush vegetation, highlighting nature’s beauty and the importance of sustainable development.

Miner's Tunnel
Miner’s Tunnel

Being named a geopark recognises Tasik Cermin’s geological importance, besides natural beauty. This status promotes conservation efforts, sustainable development, and responsible tourism. As a geopark, Tasik Cermin becomes part of a network of protected areas within Kinta Valley, contributing to the local economy through eco-tourism.

Tasik Cermin is Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) for Mirror Lake. Tasik Cermin 1, the main lake, is nestled amidst limestone karst towers, offering a unique natural setting. Accessible via walking through a 90-metre-long Miner’s Tunnel, the lake provides a tranquil spot to marvel at reflective waters, limestone cliffs, alongside lush landscapes.

Miner’s Tunnel has a history that spans over a century. It was excavated by Hakka Chinese miners in the 1900s to transport the iron ore via minecart on a rail system.

Boat rides on battery-operated dinghies are available to take visitors around the lake to explore its natural beauty and wildlife sightings. Fares for the 20-minute guided boat tour are RM25 (aged 13 years and above) / RM18 (aged 12 years and below).
