Revisiting Orang Utan Island (OUI)
Located merely 15 minutes by boat from Bukit Merah Laketown Resort’s main jetty, Orang Utan Island (OUI) is an essential stop for anyone visiting Perak.
As a renowned global eco-tourism destination, OUI offers a unique conservation experience as it is dedicated to Orang Utan ex-situ conservation efforts, education, and research programmes.
Managed by Yayasan Pulau Orang Utan Bukit Merah, their objectives include upholding ex-situ orangutan conservation, promoting active conservation, strengthening cooperation with stakeholders, ensuring sustainable financing, and supporting in-situ conservation initiatives. The foundation depends on donations to continue its efforts in research, education, conservation, breeding, including rehabilitation of orangutans.
A visit to Orang Utan Island is a compelling experience that showcases why the orangutan is a beloved symbol of Malaysia. Orang Utan is Malay for “Man of the Forest.” It is a primate closely related to humans in terms of DNA, with orangutans on the island belonging to the Pongo pygmaeus species.
The orangutan exhibits human-like behaviour, making this visit all the more captivating. Walking through the semi-circle steel-fence tunnel enclosure is a humbling experience, allowing us to peer out from what feels like a cage and witness orangutans roaming freely in their natural habitat.
