The usage of information technology has certainly grown by leaps and bounds. In 2004, the internet penetration rate in Malaysia was 2.9 million users. As at June 2012, it was 17.7 million, or 60% of the country’s population. By 2017, it is projected to grow further to 25 million internet users, compared to an estimated population of 31 million.

Of all the internet users in Malaysia currently, 51% are accessing the internet via a mobile device.

According to guest-of-honour Tan Sri Chang Ko Youn, Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia national adviser, there is a big market in Information Technology in Malaysia. It is a matter of how businesses can tap into it by meeting the needs of end users.

He also noted that in terms of technology, China has caught up with Korea and America, and it won’t be surprising that the country would even surpass the currently advanced markets. He said, “China is the biggest IT consumer in the world. Based on the direction of their market over the past few years, China would soon overtake existing technology giants.”

At the press conference following the official launching of Perak I.T. Fair, two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) were signed between Perak Computer & Digital Association (PCDA) and Sichuan Service Industry Association (SSIA) and Bowei (M) Sdn. Bhd. as new players of Perak I.T. Mall, located at Tasek Square, Ipoh.

Sichuan Service Industry Association of China, with a membership of 2,000 in Sichuan, will be bringing in at least ten wholesalers from Mainland China to expand their business here in Perak. This will be SSIA’s first presence in Malaysia, making them the first wholesaler in IT products in Perak, eliminating local middlemen.

Meanwhile, BOWEI Malaysia will be managing the smartphone zone at Perak I.T. Mall, comprising of 28 kiosks. The company will be bringing in four major telecommunications companies, namely DiGi, U Mobile, Tune Talk and Altel.

Visitors to the smartphone zone at Perak I.T. Mall can easily compare and subscribe to any of these telco or broadband plans, besides shopping for mobile phones from major brand names. And as support service, mobile phone repairers will be established as well.

There are a total of 81 lots at Perak I.T. Mall, two of which are eateries. Other IT products that will be available under this one-stop mall, besides personal electronics and mobile solutions are smart home devices and other gadgets.

With Ipoh’s very own I.T. mall, scheduled to be ready by June 2015, it looks like consumers need no longer head to Kuala Lumpur to get their hands on the latest IT products.
