Ipoh Chin Woo 2013 Chinese New Year Celebration
The tradition of celebrating Chinese New Year on the third day of the lunar new year was followed through by Ipoh Chinese Chinwoo Athletic Association, yesterday. Members of the association and their family members, from near and far, gathered at Wisma Chinwoo early to catch up with old friends. Although their jobs may have taken them away from Ipoh, they are still part of the large but close-knit Chin Woo family.
As usual, any activity held by the association is steeped in Chinese culture. Last evening, Chin Woo boys and girls showcased their skills in the form of traditional dancing, lion & dragon dance performances for an appreciative audience. These skills were acquired through weekly lessons at Ipoh Chin Woo. Besides Chinese cultural dances, lion & dragon dances, instructors at Ipoh Chin Woo also conduct kung fu and tai chi classes, at a nominal fee.
In addition to promoting Chinese culture and tradition, Ipoh Chin Woo strive to instil “love” in their members – love for themselves, for their family, society and country. It was based on this discipline and the spirit of Chin Woo, that brought home multiple gold medals by the Ipoh Chin Woo entourage at the World Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China, last October.
Celebrating its 89th anniversary this year, Ipoh Chin Woo will be hosting the 28th National Chin Woo Wushu and Cultural Carnival, in early August for three days, where international Chin Woo associations have been duly invited to participate. At the same time, a committee meeting of the World Chin Woo Federation will be held here. Once again, the association has put Ipoh on the world map.
In his speech, guest-of-honour Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan reminded us to not only “take” but also to “give”. As cliched as it may sound, it is better to give than to receive.
Once the formalities were over, which included an eye-dotting ceremony to bring two new Northern lions to life, it was time for guests to let hair down with a free-for-all karaoke session. The night wrapped up with a colourful display of fireworks.
