Tapestry: Singing Students Take the Stage

A tapestry is created by weaving together many individual threads, each contributing its own colour and texture to the finished piece. It is a fitting name for an evening that brought together different voices, personalities, musical styles and experiences.

“Tapestry”, the singing students’ recital by the music school Musicprints in Ipoh, was held on 8 August 2026 at No. 1 Lasam. Beyond an evening of music, it was more importantly an opportunity for the school’s students to step out of the classroom and perform in front of a live audience.

For most of them, it was their first time singing in public. That alone deserves a big pat on the back.

Taking the first step onto the stage

For students who are still developing their voices, performing publicly can be quite daunting. Yet they showed up, took a deep breath, and sang.

That is an important milestone for any music student, regardless of age or experience. A first recital is not necessarily about delivering a flawless performance. It is about gaining the confidence to perform, learning how to handle nerves and discovering what it feels like to share music with others.

One of the highlights of the recital was the variety of music presented.

There was something for almost every musical taste, with the programme moving between classical repertoire, opera, musical theatre, pop, contemporary and familiar favourites.

Musical theatre and classical repertoire formed an important part of the evening. For vocal students still developing their technique, these pieces are not necessarily easy. They require control, expression, and an understanding of the character and emotion behind the music. That made their recital particularly interesting.

Songs that brought different moods

Not every performance was dramatic or technically demanding. Some were simply enjoyable. Together, the selections created a programme that moved naturally between light-hearted, romantic, dramatic and reflective moments.

Another interesting aspect of the students’ musical journeys is that some of them can also play musical instruments. That adds another dimension to their musical education.

Learning an instrument gives students a deeper understanding of melody, rhythm and harmony, and those skills can complement their vocal training. It also means that their musical interests are not limited to singing alone.

For a music school, having students explore different aspects of music is part of what makes a recital like this enjoyable. Each student brings something slightly different to the stage.

Besides vocal lessons, Musicprints also offers a range of instrumental courses, including piano, guitar, drums, and violin, allowing students to explore different aspects of music and develop their skills across a variety of instruments. With the belief that music is for everyone, the school aims to make learning music accessible and enjoyable for students of different ages and abilities.

A recital to remember

For Musicprints, Tapestry was more than just a performance. It was a chance for the students to experience something they cannot fully replicate during lessons: the feeling of performing for a real audience.

There were undoubtedly nerves. There may have been a few moments when a singer wondered whether everything would go according to plan. But that is part and parcel of performing. The important thing is that they went ahead and did it.

For most of these students, this was their first public singing performance, making the recital a milestone worth celebrating. With more performances in the future, they will naturally become more comfortable on stage. They will learn how to manage nerves, connect with an audience and perhaps even discover their own performance style.

Cheering the students on are their teachers, parents, families and friends who encourage them throughout their musical journey. There are lessons to attend, songs to practise and plenty of support needed along the way.

Musicprints principal Marianne Poh believes that music education should develop not only musical ability but also confidence, discipline, creativity and self-expression. That philosophy was evident in the students’ willingness to get on stage and perform. Ultimately, Tapestry was a celebration of students taking a very important first step.
