An Evening of Musical Grandeur in Ipoh: “Taal” Tavil Nadhaswaram Concert
On 22nd November, Auditorium Kebudayaan & Kesenian Negara, along Jalan Caldwell in Ipoh hosted a captivating Tavil Nadhaswaram concert that mesmerised the audience for over three and a half hours.

Featuring 12 talented Sri Lankan artistes, the performance seamlessly blended powerful melodies with intricate rhythms, creating an evening of sheer musical magic.
The artistes, hailed as eminent exponents of their craft in Sri Lanka, were led by the illustrious Yaazhpaanam N.R.S Suthakaran, affectionately known as “Layabeatha Vivagaara Sironmani” and “Thavil Chackaravarthy”.
Suthakaran and his 11-member ensemble delivered a spellbinding performance that left the audience enthralled.

A Collaborative Effort to Celebrate Culture
The “Taal” concert was a joint presentation by the Greentown Indian Cultural Society; the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture Malaysia; Tourism Perak Management Berhad; Jabatan Kebudayaan Dan Kesenian Negara, Perak; and Majlis Kebudayaan Negeri.
The programme also received vital support from the State Exco offices of YB Tuan Sivanesan Achalingam and YB Tuan Loh Sze Yee.
This collective effort highlighted the commitment to foster cultural exchange and celebrate musical heritage.
The concert was graced by the Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Mohammed Rizvi Ismail, and his spouse, underscoring the significance of the event.

A Sonic Masterpiece: The Tavil and Nadhaswaram Performance
The evening’s highlight was the 90-minute Tavil exposition, where the thunderous beats of this traditional drum resonated with unmatched intensity. Paired with the soulful tones of the Nadhaswaram, a commanding wind instrument, the performance reached sublime heights.
Together, these elements created an unforgettable auditory experience, as the artistes demonstrated exceptional mastery and virtuosity. Each note and rhythm resonated deeply, leaving the audience in awe.
Exploring Ipoh: A Cultural Prelude to the Concert
The day before the concert, the visiting artistes were treated to a cultural tour of Ipoh, guided by the Greentown Indian Cultural Society.
This immersive experience allowed them to explore the city’s rich heritage and vibrant landmarks. The tour culminated in a sumptuous dinner at a local restaurant, offering the performers a taste of Ipoh’s culinary delights.

A Tribute to Sri Lanka’s Musical Heritage
With its breathtaking performances and deep cultural roots, the “Taal” concert was a fitting tribute to the rich musical heritage of Sri Lanka.
