Harmonies of the Valley by Kinta Valley String Orchestra (KVSO)
The Kinta Valley String Orchestra (KVSO) presented an unforgettable evening of classical and contemporary music at RTM Auditorium, Ipoh.
The concert delivered a spellbinding mix of beloved masterpieces and modern compositions, showcasing the depth of talent within the ensemble and its remarkable soloists, under the capable baton of Music Director-cum-Conductor Ng Ken Ee.
Evoking the Past: Ancient Airs and Dances
The programme opened with Ottorino Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance lute music, the suite unfolded with elegance and charm. KVSO’s performance highlighted Respighi’s gift for reimagining old forms with modern sensibilities, creating a lush auditory experience that set the tone for the evening.
This opening piece was followed by Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, with solo performances of Summer and Winter drawing rapt attention.
Summer – Ooi Tek Yi’s Virtuosity
Concert master-cum-soloist violinist Ooi Tek Yi delivered an electrifying performance of Summer. His interpretation brought out the drama of Vivaldi’s score, vividly capturing the sweltering heat and sudden summer storms. Trained at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Tek Yi’s technical prowess and emotional sensitivity lent depth to every note.
Winter – Loh Lit Wung’s Grace
In contrast, Loh Lit Wung’s rendition of Winter painted a serene and poignant picture of the season’s stillness. His graceful bowing and crisp phrasing mirrored the quiet beauty of frost-covered landscapes. A talented musician currently studying at NAFA, Lit Wung’s performance left the audience in awe of his artistry.
Following a 15-minute intermission, the concert’s second half offered a vibrant mix of the familiar and the unexpected.
Allegro con Fuoco – A Burst of Passion
The orchestra’s rendition of the Allegro con Fuoco from Dvořák’s New World Symphony No. 9 was brimming with energy. Its sweeping melodies and rhythmic drive showcased the orchestra’s cohesiveness and flair for dramatic expression.
Mondstadt – A Modern Classic
Chen Yupeng’s Mondstadt, from the popular video game Genshin Impact, introduced a touch of whimsy to the programme. KVSO brought out the cinematic richness of this piece, captivating the audience with its blend of playful themes and soaring harmonies.
A Grand Finale: The First Aspiration
The evening reached its emotional peak with The First Aspiration, a concerto by Li Bochan, featuring soloist Ng Kun Ee, better known as Shiru, on the erhu. The erhu’s plaintive tones wove a narrative of longing and hope, masterfully conveyed by Shiru’s impeccable technique and heartfelt expression. Backed by KVSO, his performance was a powerful reminder of the erhu’s ability to transcend cultural boundaries, earning thunderous applause from the audience.
