Michaelian Talent Show
1. Lee Hong Lam on cello, Chee Hui Lam (solo singer) & Lee Hong Keat on guitar

Tickets are now available for sale for the 3-night Michaelian Talent Show from August 21 to 23.

Talent shows such as this and the almost annual drama productions are part of the long tradition of St Michael’s Institution (SMI) Ipoh, dating back to 1954, marking this the school’s 62nd year in celebrating students’ talent and creativity in performing arts.

2. Yogavelan on the mic backed by The Uniterz

This achievement has set the school apart from many other educational institutions, particularly in Ipoh, in this area of the arts, providing students an excellent platform to showcase their talents to the public.

This year’s production is something different to look forward to. Besides a talent contest where students compete against one another on stage in singing, dancing, music and more, there is a short video competition, SMI Film Festival, if you wish to call it, to allow students to display their creativity in the area of digital technology.

3. solo singer Sam Jett Shi (m) collaborates with Downtowners

With the motto “Harnessing potential, nurturing character”, this year’s production, besides a showcase of talent, is also to raise funds for the school to help with its physical development. Its main project from this fund-raising is to erect a covered area for the basketball court.

So, get yourself a ticket or three to watch this year’s mind-blowing Michaelian Talent Show to support the SMI boys and girls. Yes, your presence is required as 60% of the score will come from the audience while “only” 40% will be from the judges, who will award points based on talent, entertainment value and interaction with the audience, among other factors.

4. trio from the short video 13 Years as a Michaelian, an entry in the competition (L-R): producer/scriptwriter Chua Han Ping, lead actor Julian Wan Wing Jiung & writer/editor Kajendra

From the way I look at it, these entries need to garner public votes for all three evenings in order to stand a chance of winning the grand prize of RM3000. Second prize walks away with RM2000 while third prize, RM1000.

The video category also features these same prizes except that it has two additional RM500 consolation prizes. There are a total of 19 video entries and five have been shortlisted to be shown to the public.
