It was a productive outing for Sofan Sofiza of Ampang, Ipoh, when his catch of a Patin (catfish) weighing 6.790kg was adjudged the biggest, thus winning the grand prize of RM5,000 cash in the angling competition in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Ipoh City Day.

The event attracted some 200 anglers from all over Malaysia, who were keen to get a slice of the prizes. Besides cash, there were hampers and lucky draws for participants, so that almost every entrant emerged a winner.

According to Ipoh City Council Secretary, En. Mohd. Zakuan Bin Haji Zakaria, who officiated the event, the objective of the annual angling competition was to enliven Ipoh City Day celebrations.
Additionally, it was a positive way to promote Gunung Lang as a prime tourist destination in Perak, particularly in Ipoh; an effort to improve the city’s tourism sector. In another aspect, the competition was a platform to instil a healthy hobby.

He added, “We are already planning for next year’s edition. Interested parties who wish to work together with the Ipoh City Council may get in touch with our Landscape Department.”
