Are you up to challenging yourself to complete 108 rounds of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation)? If you are, participate in Ipoh’s second Yogathon that’s happening on Sunday, Jan 20th, 2013 at Polo Ground.

Yogathon 2013

Organised by The Art Of Living (Ipoh) and Kiwanis Club of Meru Valley, Yogathon 2013 is open to all yoga enthusiasts and practitioners, including instructors, as well as those who do not have any knowledge or experience in yoga. There would be three instructors on hand to guide participants, so it shouldn’t be a problem even for total noobs. Just bring along a towel, yoga mat and drinking water!

The objectives of Yogathon 2013 are manifold. They include promoting yoga as a healthy form of exercise, providing an opportunity for all to practise yoga outdoors, to introduce Surya Namaskar, which is a special sequence of twelve yoga postures that make up the traditional Sun Salutation, and to challenge participants to complete the entire 54 sets (108 rounds) of Surya Namaskar. However, there is no obligation to complete the full set.

Did you know that on World Health Day (April 7th) last year, some 1.3 million people around the world participated in the global Surya Namaskar Yoga Challenge? This inspired Lim Fong Ying, yoga instructor and coordinator of The Art Of Living Ipoh Activities Centre to bring Yogathon to Ipoh, hence the first Ipoh Yogathon was held in July last year, participated by about 90 people. This year, the organisers hope to achieve a target of 200.

souvenir t-shirt for RM20 each

In conjunction with this healthy activity, there are two fund-raising efforts by The Art of Living. The first is the sale of Yogathon 2013 souvenir t-shirts, going at RM20 each. Funds raised will be used to support the running of Ipoh’s activities centre.

The second is a recycling project, which in fact, is open throughout the year. Donations of second-hand electrical items, books, magazines, kitchenware, clothing, toys and other recyclables are welcomed. Proceeds will go towards a bigger social project – to send instructors of The Art of Living to schools to conduct moral value lessons.
