WEIL Hotel Ipoh Sets National Benchmark as Malaysia’s First ESG-Certified Hotel

WEIL Hotel Ipoh has been officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) as the first ESG-certified hotel in the country today, 15th April 2026.

This landmark moment for Malaysia’s hospitality scene signals a shift in how hotels can operate in the future, with a stronger focus on responsibility, thoughtful practices, and long-term impact.

A Milestone That Signals a New Direction

The recognition was formally presented during a ceremony at the hotel’s WEIL Ballroom, attended by key figures from across the tourism and hospitality ecosystem.

Representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), Tourism Perak, alongside industry partners were present, reflecting the growing importance of sustainability at both state and national levels.

What makes this achievement meaningful goes beyond the accolade itself. It reflects a deeper commitment to responsible practices.

WEIL Hotel Ipoh Managing Director Liew Yu-Wei captured this sentiment clearly, noting that the recognition is not about being first for the sake of it, but about taking responsibility for guests, the community, besides the environment.

What ESG Really Means

At its core, ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance, a framework used to evaluate how businesses operate beyond profit-making.

Environmental (E): Energy consumption, carbon footprint, waste management

Social (S): Employee welfare, guest experience, community engagement

Governance (G): Transparency, accountability, ethical practices

Globally, ESG is fast becoming the benchmark for responsible business. For hotels, this involves rethinking operations at every level, from energy usage in guest rooms to how waste is managed behind the scenes.

A Journey Years in the Making

Although the ESG certification was awarded in November 2025, WEIL Hotel’s sustainability journey began much earlier.

Since opening its doors for business in December 2014, the hotel has steadily incorporated environmentally conscious practices into its operations. This evolved into a more structured transformation between October 2024 and November 2025, leading to ESG certification under a programme led by the Malaysian Association of Hotels, in collaboration with SGS Malaysia and Saimatrix Integrated.

Endorsed by MOTAC, the programme provided a measurable framework that turned long-standing initiatives into verifiable standards.

Inside WEIL’s ESG Approach

Rather than relying on a single headline initiative, WEIL Hotel’s ESG success is built on a comprehensive, ground-up approach.

Smarter Energy Use
While solar power is often seen as the default solution, WEIL Hotel adopted a more practical strategy. Structural limitations meant solar panels were not feasible, so the focus shifted towards improving efficiency.

  • High-performance chillers optimise air-conditioning energy use
  • LED bulbs replace conventional fixtures
  • Motion sensors reduce unnecessary electricity consumption
  • .
This approach delivers meaningful energy savings while remaining practical and sustainable.

    Rethinking Waste
One of the hotel’s standout initiatives is its food waste composting system, introduced in 2024.

Instead of sending waste to landfills, all food waste is converted into an organic soil enhancer. This eliminates unpleasant by-products while supporting a circular economy, where waste is repurposed into something useful.

The hotel is also exploring partnerships with agricultural producers to channel this compost into farming, creating a meaningful connection between hospitality and agriculture.

    Removing Single-Use Plastics
In guest rooms, a subtle but impactful change has been introduced. Plastic water bottles have been removed.
Each room is now equipped with a filtered water system and reusable glass bottles. Being simple, this shift significantly reduces plastic waste over time.

People at the Heart of Sustainability

Sustainability at WEIL Hotel extends beyond environmental initiatives.

The social aspect of ESG focuses on:

  • Fair treatment and staff wellbeing
  • A safe and supportive working environment
  • Meaningful engagement with guests and the wider community
  • .
From internal policies to guest experience, the approach is evident. Sustainability should benefit people just as much as it protects the environment.

    Governance That Builds Trust

Behind the scenes, strong governance ensures that these initiatives remain consistent, measurable, and accountable.

    This includes:

  • Transparent decision-making processes
  • Ethical supplier selection, with preference given to sustainable partners
  • Systems to track performance and continuous improvement
  • .
Such a structure ensures that sustainability efforts are not only implemented but sustained over time.

    Global Recognition Strengthens Local Achievement

In addition to ESG certification, WEIL Hotel has also achieved LEED Gold O+M certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a globally recognised benchmark for sustainable building operations.

Together, these recognitions position the hotel as both a local pioneer and a participant in global sustainability standards.

A Boost for Perak’s Tourism Future

This milestone carries broader implications for Perak.
Long known for its heritage and culture, the state is increasingly emerging as a forward-thinking destination for sustainable tourism. WEIL Hotel’s achievement demonstrates that ESG practices are not limited to multinational chains or major urban centres.
They are achievable and scalable within Malaysia’s own hospitality landscape.

    Setting the Benchmark

Now in its 11th year of operations, WEIL Hotel continues to move forward with purpose. The team remains committed to continuous improvement, purposeful innovation, and sharing knowledge with industry peers.

The hotel welcomes others in the industry to learn from its journey, signalling a collaborative approach to advancing sustainability in Malaysia.
