Restoran Yi Ding U Cuisine: Ipoh’s Must-Visit for Dim Sum and Roast Goose
Tucked discreetly behind the well-known Tow Boo Keong Temple, Restoran Yi Ding U Cuisine may be a relatively new name on Ipoh’s food scene, but it has quickly built a reputation among foodies who take their roast meats seriously.

Opened just last year, this unassuming eatery draws a steady stream of early risers and loyal regulars, many of whom come with one thing in mind: the roast goose.

The Craft Behind the Roast
Behind the gleaming display of roast meats stands Kampar-born Mok Weng Fook, or Ah Fook, a seasoned “siew lap” master with three decades of experience under his belt. His journey has taken him through kitchens in Malaysia and abroad, including large Chinese banquet restaurants where serving hundreds of tables in a single session was part of daily life.

Years of working under different masters have shaped his technique, but what truly defines his cooking today is refinement. Through constant feedback from diners, he has gradually adjusted and perfected his approach, resulting in roast meats that are both consistent and deeply satisfying.
Roast Goose Without Shortcuts
The roast goose here is a labour of patience and precision. Each bird, weighing between 4 and over 5 kilograms, is roasted for no less than 45 minutes in an Apollo roaster.

With up to eight geese prepared in a single round, careful control of temperature, shifting between high and low heat, is essential.
What sets Fook Sifu’s version apart is his decision not to marinate the geese. Instead, he relies entirely on technique to bring out the natural richness of the meat.
The result is a flavour that feels clean yet full-bodied. Here, the roast goose leans away from the dry Hong Kong style, featuring a light sheen of oil that enhances its flavour.
For those who enjoy an extra layer of taste, the meat can be paired with house-made plum sauce or drizzled with the savoury juices collected from the roast itself.
Both options are crafted in-house, complementing rather than overpowering the dish.

More Than Just Roast Meats
While the roast goose may be the main attraction, the restaurant offers more than just its signature speciality.
A separate dim sum kitchen, helmed by another experienced chef, runs alongside the roast section.

This allows diners to enjoy a mix of freshly prepared dim sum and hearty roast meats in one sitting, a combination that is both comforting and indulgent.

The menu includes familiar dim sum staples, alongside warm bowls of porridge, generously filled tai pau, and a traditional sweet peanut cream dessert known as fah sang wu.

It is a spread that caters appropriately to a leisurely brunch as it does to a quick, enjoyable breakfast.
A Morning Favourite Among Locals
Restoran Yi Ding U Cuisine operates from early morning until mid-afternoon, making it a go-to spot for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. The dual-kitchen concept ensures there is always something fresh coming out, whether you arrive early or closer to noon.
That said, timing matters. The roast goose is particularly popular and tends to sell out fast, so arriving earlier gives you the best chance to enjoy before it’s sold out.
Restoran Yi Ding U Cuisine opens daily from 7am to 2.30pm and is closed on Mondays.
