13 classic cars ranging from MG Midget, MG Magnet, Morris 1000, Mini Minor, and Volkswagen Beetle, from the Ipoh Vintage Car Club cruised Ipoh town on Sunday morning – an activity to foster closer friendship ties among club members.
Members assembled at the car park of Stadium Perak as early as 9am but the convoy of cars only moved at 10.45am.
From there, the cars exited to Jalan Ghazali Jawi and headed to Fair Park. Some of the landmarks passed by the convoy were the Ipoh General Hospital, YMCA, Perak State Secretariat, St. Michael’s Institution, Ipoh Padang, Ipoh Railway Station, State Mosque, OCPD’s office, Kinta River Bridge, Shen Jai School, Urban Transformation Centre (UTC), The Store along Jalan Dato Onn Jaafar (Cockman Street) and Klinik Kesihatan Greentown.
All in all, the fun drive took some 1.5 hours, where they stopped at Old Andersonian Club & Cafeteria for a lunch of banana leaf rice.
One of the participants, Maj (R) Abu Bakar from Sg. Siput found that by being a member of Ipoh Vintage Car Club, he has made new friends who shared his interest in vintage cars. Driving a striking red 1962 MG Midget, which he has owned since 1992, Maj Abu Bakar who also has a Mini 850, a Morris 1000, a Vespa scooter and two Raleigh bicycles at home, urged all vintage and classic car owners to join the club for fellowship.
The owner of the lone 1956 MG Magnet, James Foo, shared it was quite taxing to upkeep his car, an inheritance from his late father. Working in Kuala Lumpur, James doesn’t fail to take the car for a spin whenever he returns to Ipoh, his hometown. Having maintained the car for the past 12 years, James sees himself taking care of the car as long as possible, in memory of his late father.
Those interested to join the club can just drive over to the car park of Stadium Perak on Sunday mornings, and ask for Uncle Chow.
