SRJK Ipoh Mali Comedy

Following the successful debuts of three local aspiring standup comedians (KT Pillai, Rizal Fauzi, and Julian Looi) a year ago at the JKR (Jom Ketawa Ramai-ramai) Live Comedy Show, these jokers were back at it again on Friday the 13th, this time bringing along with them another comedian to be, Shawn Wong.

With this show being named ‘SRJK Ipoh Mali Comedy,’ we were warned beforehand not to expect too much from the comedians. After all, they were only at the Primary School level. But then again, there is much difference between Primary 1 and Primary 6.

Rather than meaning Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan, SRJK is actually a clever play on the first initials of the four comedians, arranged according to Shawn, Rizal, Julian, and KT! Hosted at Oldtown Beerhole Bistro & Cafe in Ipoh, which has established itself as an up-and-coming open-mic joint for new comedians to hone their standup skills, the bistro was filled to the brim in support of the acts.

As expected from the SRJK-standard comedians, there were some hits and misses. Compared to the first local live comedy show a year ago, Rizal Fauzi and KT Pillai have made great progress in terms of material and delivery. Thus, it was no surprise that both of them drew the loudest cheers and claps from the floor, as DJ Damian Nagalingam supported the show by spinning 70’s and retro music between the acts.

As mentioned earlier, there were misses, too. Then again, with more stage time, these aspiring standup comics will slowly but surely improve with each and every show.
