The Ipoh City Council’s Strategic Communications Unit recently undertook a meaningful work trip to Hat Yai City, Thailand.

This visit coincided with Visit Ipoh Year 2024 and served as a preview of what visitors can expect during Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

A Warm Welcome in Hat Yai

The delegation, comprising Ipoh City Council officials and Perak media representatives led by Perak Media Sports & Welfare Club President Encik Rosli Mansor, received a warm reception from Hat Yai City Municipality.

Hat Yai Deputy Mayors Mr. Winai Pinthong, Mr. Armad Benarlee, and Mr. Sumrit Boonrat extended their hospitality, making the delegates feel at home.

Discussions between the councils covered strategies to boost tourism and collaboration, including media engagement. Cllr. Hamzah emphasised the potential for economic and cultural exchange, stating: “Through cooperation, we can strengthen tourism and deepen friendships, benefitting both cities and their communities.”

The visit’s second phase featured an engaging evening hosted by the Southern Thailand Media Association at the BP Grand Tower Hotel.

The programme began with a friendly welcome from Mr. Chaiyong Maneerungsakul, President of the Southern Thailand Media Association, who is also the Senator for Songkhla Province. His address celebrated the enduring ties between the regions and the potential for deeper collaboration.

A forum titled Media Cooperation Between Malaysia and Thailand to Promote Tourism brought together representatives from the media, local government, and tourism sectors. Moderated by Mr. Daniya Meringing, discussions underscored the media’s role in showcasing unique attractions and fostering a robust tourism ecosystem.

Thai panellists shared insights into attracting Malaysian visitors, noting over 3.7 million arrivals this year. They encouraged Malaysia to leverage its rich cultural diversity and hospitality to further attract Thai tourists.

Ipoh’s Vision for Tourism

Cllr. Hamzah expressed optimism about applying the ideas shared during the forum to enhance Ipoh’s appeal. He emphasised the importance of understanding Thai visitors’ preferences and raising Ipoh’s profile as a preferred tourist destination.
