Ipoh & Nanning Renew Friendship City Ties

18 years ago on 1st April 2005, the 6th Mayor of Ipoh City, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Hassan Nawawi Bin Abd. Rahman and the Deputy Mayor of Nanning City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China Mdm. Xiao Yingzi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Friendship City relationship between the two cities.

The objective was based on mutual interests to strengthen and advance partnership, including cooperation between Ipoh City and Nanning City. Furthermore, it was to promote understanding and friendship between Malaysians and Chinese, particularly in the fields of economy, science & technology, trade, culture, education, as well as sports.

Throughout these eighteen years of Friendship City relationship, there had been mutual benefit between the two cities. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Nanning City donated two units of ventilators to the Ipoh City Council. The ventilators have been placed at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh (HRPB).

The renewal of Ipoh-Nanning Friendship City relationship on 9th June 2023 through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was held at M Roof Hotel in Ipoh. Going beyond the city level, this diplomatic effort involves a higher authority, the state government.

Huang Hai Yan representing Nanning City was witnessed by YB Puan Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, Chairman of the Perak State Housing & Local Government Committee; Ms. Huang Wen, Deputy Governor of People’s Government of Xingning District of Nanning; and Mr. Zhou Youbin, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang.
