Perak Women for Women Celebrates International Women’s Day
Clad in many different shades of purple, women streamed into the ballroom of Impiana Hotel Ipoh to celebrate womanhood. The hi-tea event, organised by a non-governmental organisation known as Perak Women for Women (PWW), was held in conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD), which falls on 8th March annually.
By the way, purple is the official colour for IWD and this year’s theme is ‘Pledge For Parity’. The day is to recognise and celebrate the successes and achievements of women from all walks of life.
The event, where Perak Women for Women had its own theme of ‘Listen, Learn, Lead’, was not only a time of fun and laughter, but also one on empowerment.
Three speakers were lined up to share their thoughts and experiences on giving assistance to women, and to empower them, through knowledge, resources and various other means.
The three women activists were Hannah Kam, Zainah Anwar and Ivy Josiah. Those who are involved in non-governmental organisations, particularly pertaining to women’s issues, would have heard of these household names.
Delectable food aside, the take-home message from the event, as a woman, is to be true to yourself, to be yourself without requiring the approval of a man, to voice our grouses against injustices and to seek freedom from violence without hesitation.
Despite the hardships and challenges these women activists have to overcome, courage to continue comes from the passion that they have to help women who are stuck in certain situations, to empower them. These selfless volunteers are courageous, no doubt, but this doesn’t mean that the heavy responsibility should solely fall on their shoulders.
Everyone can make a change, if we put our hearts to it.

great event, i am glad Malaysians start to take womens day seriously! Here in Russia, the policemen went out to the streets to give out flowers, so did the traffic controls.
