Perak PWD Open Chess Tournament 2023 (Kejohanan Catur Para Terbuka Negeri Perak 2023)
For the first time ever, an open chess tournament for people with different abilities (PWDs or Orang Kelainan Upaya – OKU) was hosted in the state of Perak. The two-day event received 42 athletes from six states: Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Kelantan, and Johor, with Perak as the host. Athletes were hosted in Ipoh at Aisha DNI Agro Resort, the tournament’s strategic partner.
Apart from providing a platform for these PWD chess athletes to play in a competitive environment, one of the tournament’s objectives was to create an interest among PWDs in exploring chess as a sport. A tournament with such a vast reach also raises public awareness that PWDs possess many positive traits, despite the daily challenges they face. Self-discipline, confidence, and competitiveness are just a few of their characteristics.
Organised by the Perak Disabled Chess Association (Persatuan Catur Para Negeri Perak) with support from the Perak Department of Youth & Sports, the tournament was open to PWD chess contingents from around the country, as well as individual PWDs, provided they hold a valid PWD card.
The competition was divided into gender categories of male and female. Then, within each gender category, athletes competed based on their visual or physical disability. The top eight players per category won cash prizes as well as a certificate of commendation. Gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to the top three winners per category. Every athlete also received a certificate of participation.
