Perak Art & Cultural Green Earth Tree-Planting Initiative
Persatuan Kebudayaan Daerah Kinta and Greentown Indian Cultural Society Ipoh jointly organised a tree-planting activity in the compound of Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara Perak (JKKN) located along Jalan Caldwell on Tuesday, 21st March 2023, to celebrate the 75th Independence of India (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav). Guest-of-honour was the esteemed Ms Amrita Dash – Counsellor (Community Affairs & Labour) High Commission of India to Malaysia. Her presence further established the strong bilateral relationship that both countries enjoy.
She was delighted to note that both Malaysia and India shared similar goals in keeping Mother Earth green with noble projects such as tree planting, leaving something positive for future generations. She added, “Malaysia is a bosom friend of India, so I hope we can turn this into a yearly event, if possible.”
Coincidentally, 21st March was also International Day of Forests, a day observed annually to highlight the significance of forests. This made the tree-planting activity all the more meaningful. A total of nine trees were planted, each adopted by a governmental or non-governmental art & culture organisation, as listed below:
Tourism Perak
Majlis Kebudayaan Negeri Perak (MKN) & Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara Perak (JKKN)
Greentown Indian Cultural Society Ipoh
Kinta District Cultural Association Perak
Khalsa Diwan Perak
Perak Malayalee Association
Perak Telegu Association
Sanathan Dharam Sabah
Perak Hindu Sangam
Meanwhile, the trees were planted by Dato’ Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi (Patron, Kinta District Cultural Association Perak), Cik Nurmalis Musa (CEO, Tourism Perak), Encik Abdul Rashid Abdullah (Director, National Department of Culture & Arts Perak), Encik Yusof Najmi Othman (Deputy Chairman, State Cultural Council, Perak), Mr & Mrs Nitiananda Jawahar (Patrons, Greentown Indian Cultural Society Ipoh), and Ms Ruth Robert (President, Greentown Indian Cultural Society Ipoh), among other invitees.
The species of tree was Cassia fistula or commonly known as Golden Shower. Other names are Purging Cassia, Laburnum or Pudding Pipe Tree. Interestingly, Cassia fistula is the national tree and national flower of our neighbouring country, Thailand. In India, though, these flowers are used during Vishu celebrations (traditional Malayali New Year).
