Over 3,000 Ipohites Attend the 64th Edition of Ipoh Low-Carbon Day
This month, the Ipoh Low-Carbon Day (ILCD) was themed #FitMalaysia, coinciding with “National Sports Day” which is celebrated on every second Saturday of October. “National Sports Day” is an annual national event that promotes a culture of sports and healthy living.
This ILCD programme commenced with the Geopark 5 Run, a 5km run organised by the Perak State Parks Corporation (Geopark), which was jointly flagged off by Ipoh City Mayor Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi bin Baharin@Md Daud, along with Deputy Director of the State Parks Corporation. The Geopark 5 Run was a special event celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Perak State Geopark.
With its starting point at Dataran Ipoh, the race course wound through the heart of Ipoh City before culminating back at Dataran Ipoh. It’s worth noting that Ipoh itself is one of the locations encompassed by the Geopark.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, HRH Raja Muda Perak Darul Ridzuan Raja Jaafar ibni Almarhum Raja Muda Musa and HRH Raja Di-Hilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain ibni Almarhum Sultan Idris Iskandar Al-Mutawakkil Alallahi Shah graciously launched the International Geopark Run (IGR) Series 0.1 2024 Kinta Valley.
By the way, the International Geopark Run Series is an annual event that will feature various geopark locations across the country. In 2024, it will commence in Kinta Valley (Ipoh), followed by Lenggong (Perak), Gunung Jerai (Kedah), and finally, on the picturesque island of Langkawi (Kedah).
Among the esteemed guests were Perak Menteri Besar YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Saarani bin Mohamad, Speaker of the Perak State Legislative Assembly YB Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid, and Perak State Secretary YB Dato’ Ahmad Suaidi bin Abdul Rahim.
The Geopark 5 Run @ Ipoh Low-Carbon Day (5km), held at Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh, served as a platform to promote IGR for the upcoming year. It has been incorporated into the Visit Perak Year 2024 (VPY 2024) Calendar of Events for March 2024.
The launch was a collaborative effort of Ipoh City Council (MBI), Perak State Parks Corporation, Tourism Perak, and Global Exhibitions & Conferences, alongside Persatuan Nadi Sihat Malaysia.
The Ipoh Low-Carbon Day programme, conducted every fourth Sunday morning of the month, seeks to engage Ipoh community in various social activities that enable knowledge sharing, including recycling used cooking oil by Persatuan Gema Perak, weaving and stitching, crafting souvenirs from recyclable materials, understanding our medication, and witnessing the artistic creations of local associations, plus NGOs present at the ILCD event.
Aligned with the programme’s goals, Ipoh City Council aims to reduce carbon emissions by 2030. In a significant initiative, MBI has deployed two units of electric motorcycles for a month as part of a ‘Proof Of Concept.’ These electric motorcycles (Blueshark R1), generously provided by Blueshark (M), not only save operational and maintenance costs but also contribute to reducing air pollution associated with petrol-powered motorcycles. This initiative aligns with the Ipoh City Council’s strategic plan for the following statuses: “Low Carbon,” “Walkable City 2023,” and “Smart City.”
