A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ipoh City Council (MBI) and a private company, PEBEC Bhd, to develop Ipoh’s first dinosaur park, which will be sited at Gunung Lang Recreation Park covering an area of six acres, within the vicinity of Kinta Valley Geopark.

The signatories were Ipoh City Mayor Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi bin Baharin@Md Daud and PEBEC Bhd Chairman En. Norali bin Nordin. The momentous event was witnessed by MBI Council Member cum Chairman of the MBI Tourism Sub-Committee Y.Bhg. Dato’ Ahmad Hariri bin Kamaruddin, alongside Principal Consultant of PEBEC Bhd Yang Mulia Tunku Dato’ Ahmad Burhanuddin bin Tunku Datuk Seri Adnan.

This joint venture project between the Ipoh City Council and the private sector, with an estimated cost of RM7 million, does not involve any funding from the government. At six acres, this park is of medium scale as both parties wish to maintain the scenic natural environment with its surrounding limestone hills of Gunung Lang, while at the same time reducing the park’s development impact. When fully operational, this new attraction of Gunung Lang will be a suitable destination for families with children, both for leisure plus educational purposes. Although an entrance fee will be imposed, it will be one of the lowest among all the dinosaur parks operating in the country.

For now, there are already six similar parks in Malaysia, namely:

1. The TOP (KOMTAR) – Penang
2. Resorts World Genting
3. National Science Centre Kuala Lumpur
4. Teruntum Zoo, Kuantan
5. Melaka Zoo, Melaka
6. Jurassic Land, Tuaran, Sabah

This Dinosaur Park in Ipoh is the only one located at an eco-park. Its construction will cover 2 phases. Phase 1 will begin as soon as all plans are approved with an estimated construction period of between six to eight months. The area of approximately 6 acres will include:

i. 30 static and ‘animatronic’ dinosaurs
ii. Learning Centre with an area of approximately 2500 square metres which can accommodate up to 100 students at a time and will provide information, besides knowledge about habitat, paleontology, and more regarding dinosaurs.
iii. Gift shop

Phase 2 will start within 1 year from the opening date but depends on public response. Development of this phase includes:

i. 3D/4D theatre
ii. Water play area

Expected to open by mid-2024 during Visit Perak Year, a Dinosaur Park at Gunung Lang Recreational Park is a welcome addition to its petting zoo and boating activity. It is hoped that this new attraction in Ipoh will further boost the tourism sector in the city. At this point, Gunung Lang Recreation Park already attracts an average of 30,000 visitors a month, ranking it the fifth most-visited recreational area in Malaysia.

  1. Absolutely thrilled to read your latest update, as always! I must say, the idea of a dinosaur park in the heart of Ipoh is just mind-blowing! It’s fantastic how it’s going to be a blend of fun and education, especially for the little ones.

  2. Also, kudos to the folks at Ipoh City Council and PEBEC Bhd for ensuring that the park won’t disturb the natural beauty of Gunung Lang. That’s truly commendable! I can’t wait to take my nephew there once it’s opened. He’s a massive dinosaur fan, you know.
