Lotus Shoes For Lotus Feet
Opposite from Lim Tian Seng’s Peranakan Beaded Shoe Shop in Temple Street (Jalan Tokong) is Raymond of Wah Aik Shoemaker, who also makes beaded shoes. However, the highlight here is actually his Lotus Shoes, which are really small shoes custom made for ladies of the old days with bound feet, also known as Lotus Feet.
Obviously, such ladies are on the extinct already and so, the Lotus Shoes that are made now are only made for display purposes or as souvenirs. Most of the shoes displayed at Raymond’s shop are not for sale as they are considered ‘antiques’ but for those that are available for sale, they are priced at RM95 per pair.
For someone like me who has never come across a real life woman with lotus feet, it is difficult to phantom how it is possible to have such small feet.
