Hakka Youth Cup 2025 – Badminton Selection (Northern Zone)

The Hakka Youth Cup 2025 – Badminton Selection (Northern Zone) was successfully held at KB Badminton Academy in Ipoh, bringing together Hakka youth players from across northern Malaysia for a day of competitive yet friendly badminton.

The event served as the official Northern Zone selection for the 2026 national finals and reaffirmed the tournament’s long-standing focus on participation, unity and community engagement.

Wide Regional Participation

A total of 20 teams took part in the selection, with two players per team competing exclusively in the doubles format. As a regional qualifier, the tournament attracted participants from various parts of Perak, including Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar, as well as Penang, with players travelling from Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam.

The wide representation reflected the strong network of Hakka youth associations and highlighted the continued relevance of the tournament as a platform for bringing members together through sport.

Three Competitive Categories

Matches were divided into three age-based categories. Players aged 18 to 29 competed in the first category, while the second category was open to participants aged 30 and above. The third category was based on a combined team age of 90 years and above, allowing more senior players to participate on equal footing.

This structure enabled players of different age groups to compete comfortably while maintaining the recreational spirit of the event.

Prizes and Qualifications for National Finals

Champions received RM1,000 in cash, along with trophies and gifts. First runners-up were awarded RM500, accompanied by trophies and gifts. Both teams per age category will enjoy a fully sponsored trip to the national finals in May 2026 in Kuantan, Pahang.

Each category also included two second runners-up, who received RM200 each, trophies and gifts.

The Hakka Youth Cup Finals in Kuantan, Pahang will bring together representatives from six regions across Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak, creating a nationwide platform for Hakka youth participation.

The 2026 finals will mark the 8th edition of the Hakka Youth Cup. Since its inception in 2005, the tournament has been held once every three years, with previous editions taking place in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2023.

Tournament Objective

The Northern Zone selection was organised by the Perak Hakka Association Youth Section, with support from the Kheh Community Association Kuala Kangsar Youth Section as co-organiser. Youth members are defined as those below 45 years old.

According to Mr Liew Wei Sheng, Youth Head of the Kheh Community Association Kuala Kangsar, who is also the General Secretary of the Federation of Malaysia Hakka Associations, the primary objective of the tournament is to encourage active participation among members.

To maintain this focus, entries are limited to amateur and leisure players, ensuring that the competition remains accessible and inclusive.

Mr Lin Chek Ming, Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Malaysia Hakka Associations Youth Section, emphasised that the tournament places greater importance on participation and camaraderie than on match results. The event provides an opportunity for members to connect, interact and strengthen relationships through a shared interest in sports.

Senior Support for Hakka Youth

Mr Hoo Chin Fok, an 86-year-old retired businessman and senior member of the Perak Hakka Community Association, increased his sponsorship contribution by an additional RM500, on top of his initial RM500 sponsorship. His support was motivated by an aspiration to encourage the younger generation, including his grandson, who took part in the Northern Zone selection.
