Dou Mu Gong Kuala Kangsar Handover of Nine Emperor Gods Imperial Seal

Slightly one year since hosting the ancient Nine Emperor Gods Imperial Seal, taking on the responsibility from a Nine Emperor Gods temple in Alor Setar, it’s time to hand it over to the next host, a Nine Emperor Gods temple in Semeling, Kedah.

The handover ceremony was nothing short of spectacular, with a two-day event that saw committee members from Nine Emperor Gods temples from across Southeast Asia converge in Kuala Kangsar, Perak to witness the special occasion. They were joined by committee members from more than 80 other Taoist temples from all over Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, plus Singapore, Thailand alongside Indonesia.

As host for the first time after waiting for 36 years, it was a challenging task for Persatuan Penganut Dewa Dou Mu Gong Kuala Kangsar, Perak to organise such a massive do that included a Madani unity street parade, in line with the vision of the Madani unity government. The 2km route began from the temple to Sultan Azlan Shah Bridge, before making its way back. The street parade saw the participation of 20 floats, 8 deity sedan chairs, as well as LED lion and dragon dancers. The floats were contributed by temples in Ipoh, Taiping and Pantai Remis, among other towns.

The festivity was joined in by the Malay and Indian communities; both contributed cultural performances during the parade. The main attraction of the procession was the Kuala Kangsar Dou Mu Gong float, measuring 59 feet in length and 16.5 feet in height. The Madani Unity parade wrapped up with a fireworks display that lighted up the night sky of the Royal town of Kuala Kangsar.

In a religious Taoist ceremony steeped in tradition, the Imperial Seal was placed at a special altar for devotees to pay homage, in return for blessings from the Nine Emperor Gods. Devotees were encouraged to walk under the altar to receive empowerment. It was a rare opportunity. After all, the next time this Kuala Kangsar Nine Emperor Gods temple hosts the Imperial Seal again will be 36 years from now, in Year 2059.
