Commemorating Three Dr. Sun Yat Sen Occasions in Ipoh

There was a flurry of activity in Ipoh Old Town last Saturday, 25th November 2023, with not one, not two, but THREE commemorations related to Dr. Sun Yat Sen in Ipoh. They were:

  • The 112th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution
  • the 157th birth year of Sun Yat Sen
  • 10th anniversary of the book, “Road to Revolution: Dr. Sun Yat Sen and his Comrades in Ipoh”
  • .
These events were graced by YB Tuan Loh Sze Yee (Chairman of the Perak State Tourism, Industry, Investment & Corridor Development Committee); Consul Zheng Xiaohui (Consulate General of The People’s Republic of China in Penang); Ms. Alexandra Sun (great-grand-niece of Dr. Sun Yat Sen who is also President of the Sun Yat Sen Cultural Foundation); alongside Mr. Li Anjin (Deputy Secretary-General of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation).

The highlights were the soft opening of an exhibition on “Trail of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh” at the Perak Chinese Amateur Dramatic Association (PCADA) and the unveiling of a mock-up map signage for the “Trail of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh”. The exhibition plus map signage are based on the book, “Road to Revolution: Dr. Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh” authored by Ms. Chan Sue Meng of Sue Meng Heritage which was published by the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall in 2013.

Perak was home to the largest number of Tongmenghui branches, and to nearly a quarter of the 100 reading clubs (promoting revolutionary literature) across Southeast Asia. The ‘Preparatory Meeting’, to raise funds for the Huanghuagang Uprising, regarded as the most important of all uprisings, was held in Ipoh at the home of Mr. Teh Lay Seng, Chairman of Tongmenghui (Revolutionary Alliance). Perak was the top three fundraisers in Malaya.

Admission is free-of-charge. This exhibition provides visitors an understanding of Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s vision of a Modern China, and sheds light on the early 20th-century Chinese society in Ipoh and Perak at large, besides the community’s efforts to support his cause.

After the soft opening, Sue Meng took guests on a walk along the trail of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh.
