9th Asia Cup Men’s Hockey Tournament 2013: India vs. Oman
India thrashed Oman 8 – 0 in the opening match of the 9th Asia Cup men’s field hockey tournament currently being hosted in Ipoh, Malaysia.
Scoring 4-0 in the first half, the Indians changed tactics in the second half to try to put a bit more pressure on their opponents.
Oman’s coach, Oliver Michael Kurtz, had expected a closer match, even though they knew India would be tough. However, he said that his team has a lot of young players and they are learning step by step, match by match.
He continued, “We had a good plan, but the players did not follow through on the field. I am positive they will improve.”
India is playing under pressure because only the champions of Asia Cup will secure a spot in the World Cup at The Hague, Netherlands next year. The other teams vying the spot are Pakistan and Malaysia.
India were Asia Cup Champions in 2003 and 2007, and runners-up four times, in 1982,1985, 1989 and 1993.
