88m Yu Sheng Prosperity Toss Sets Longest Record in Local Ipoh Community
A local record was set for the longest “lo hei” at 88 metres in length, arranged in figure ‘8’, in a special event organised by the restaurant 喜味xiwei1898 (Nanyang Village) in Medan Ipoh Bestari, located behind Lotus’s Ipoh Garden. The event was held in conjunction with Chap Goh Mei (15th night in Hokkien), to mark the closing of the Chinese New Year celebrations for the Year of the Rabbit.
Prosperity toss was invented in Malaysia in the 1940s by a Chinese emigrant, Loke Ching Fatt. He arrived in the 1920s, settling down and establishing a catering business in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan in the 1940s. Read this article about the famous Yee Sang dish and how it was popularised by Loke Ching Fatt’s son, Loke Chee Chow.
Guest-of-honour was YB Ong Boon Piow, State Assemblyperson for Bercham, appropriately so, as this restaurant is situated within the Bercham state seat constituency.
Enlivening the programme was Heaven Motorcycle Club (Heaven MC), providing a rare chance for guests to pose for photographs with the gleaming Harley Davidson motorbikes.
Participants of the prosperity toss paid RM50 per person, which included a buffet lunch. Monies collected from this event were channelled to charity for the benefit of the community. View the full photo album on our Facebook Page.
