50th Golden Jubilee Celebration of Kopmbi
The Ipoh City Council Workers’ Cooperative (Kopmbi) recently organised a memorable dinner in Ipoh to mark its 50th Golden Jubilee celebration.
Its chairman, K. Jagathesan Kalimuthu, in his opening speech, gave tribute to the dedication of past leaders who initially had the foresight to establish Kopmbi (Koperasi Pekerja-pekerja Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh) and subsequently led it to be listed among the 100 best cooperatives in the country, and gained recognition as a Syariah-compliant cooperative last year.
He added, “I am delighted to be able to gather members to join in this celebration tonight and at the same time, have the opportunity to meet up with former Board Members during this special event, organised for the first time since the inception of our cooperative fifty years ago.
“I sincerely hope that this event invokes in us a sense of gratefulness for all the good that has been achieved thus far and to reflect on the history of our unique cooperative. It was a long struggle, filled with various obstacles along the way prior to the successful establishment of Kopmbi. The services of the early-day leaders are very important to us. Their dedication will never be forgotten.”
Kopmbi started 50 years ago with only 50 members. Membership has now increased to 1500 members, with a total stake of RM21 million. The cooperative recorded RM2.8 million in revenue last year, compared to RM40,000 50 years ago. In 2018, the cooperative achieved its highest dividend payout at 10 percent. Its lowest payout was 5 percent.
Also present at the dinner event were Ipoh City Mayor Dato’ Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim and Council Secretary Encik Zakuan Zakaria.
