41st Ipoh Car-Free Day

June’s edition of Ipoh Car-Free Day attracted some 7,000 visitors from various age groups and backgrounds from Ipoh and its surrounding areas.

They participated in the monthly activity, hosted along Jalan Raja Dihilir, to enjoy the quiet environment, usually busy with cars and other vehicles. Yesterday’s event was the 41st edition since it was first established in October 2015.

The main theme for this Ipoh Car-Free Day was World Environment Day Celebration, as well as Aidilfitri. Hari Raya kan sebulan?

June is actually filled with many ‘World Days’, and they are:

1 June – International Children’s Day
5 June – World Environment Day
5 June – Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid al-Fitr)
8 June – World Oceans Day
14 June – World Blood Donor Day
16 June (2nd Sunday of June) – Father’s Day
20 June – World Refugee Day
21 June – World Hydrography Day
21 June – International Yoga Day
26 June – International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

According to Ipoh City Council Secretary Encik Zakuan Zakaria, the car-free day programme is to achieve the aspirations of Ipoh Sports City, lower carbon footprint and improve the Independence Index among the people by fostering environmental awareness, health, safety, history and legacy.

Additionally, among the Sustainable Development Goals to be met by the City Council include:

i. Cities 2030, Cities for All: Implementing the New Urban Agenda (The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum: 7th – 13th February 2018);
ii. Leave No One Behind (National Planning Congress in conjunction with World Town Planning Day: 29th November 2018);
iii. Our Own Town (Local Authorities Enhancement Convention: 10th – 11th December, 2018).

As usual, the programme attracted visitors to participate in events offered by various government and non-governmental organisations.

The highlight was the Aidilfitri Fun Ride with 200 cyclists, flagged off by guest-of-honour YB Paul Yong Choo Kiong, Exco for Housing, Local Government, Public Transport, Non-Islamic Affairs and New Villages.

Raja Ashman Shah Hockey Academy also conducted a skills test programme in conjunction with World Olympic Day, observed around the globe on 23rd June. Present was YBhg. Dato’ Hj Abdul Rahim Md Ariff, President of the Perak Hockey Association.
