40th Ipoh Car-Free Day
Some 8,000 people comprising all races in Ipoh City and surrounding areas participated in ‘Ipoh Car-Free Day’ yesterday, which took place along Jalan Raja Dihilir from 7am until 10am.
The event was also attended by YDH. Toh Muda Orang Kaya Kaya Panglima Kinta Seri Amar Bangsa DiRaja Dato’ Ab. Wahab bin Dato’ Seri Azizul Hassan (Orang Besar Jajahan Kinta), Ipoh City Council Secretary Encik Mohd Zakuan Zakaria, City Councillors, Council department heads, and other staff members.
According to Encik Zakuan, the car-free day programme is to achieve the aspirations of Ipoh Sports City, lower carbon footprint and improve the Independence Index among the people by fostering environmental awareness, health, safety, history and legacy.

Additionally, among the Sustainable Development Goals to be met by the City Council include:
i. Cities 2030, Cities for All: Implementing the New Urban Agenda (The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum: 7th – 13th February 2018);
ii. Leave No One Behind (National Planning Congress in conjunction with World Town Planning Day: 29th November 2018);
iii. Our Own Town (Local Authorities Enhancement Convention: 10th – 11th December, 2018).

As with previous months, the event attracted the support of various governmental and non-profit organisations, such as Persatuan Suri & Anggota Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (PUSPANITA), Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE), BOMBA, Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), Perak State Health Department, Malaysia Interaction Culture Association (MICA), Daybreak Association, Ipoh City Watch, Tun Razak Library, and more.

Among the activities lined up in this edition were watermelon carving competition, Fun Walk/Run by the Rotary Club, as well as Yoga.
Furthermore, visitors to this Ipoh Car-Free Day participated in aerobics, archery, street carrom and other sports to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Do take note that Ipoh Car-Free Day takes a break in May for Ramadan.
