2015 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup – Match 18 – Australia 2 (1) – New Zealand 2 (3)
Australia may have won over New Zealand 3-1 in their Round Robin match but in the final, the Black Sticks turned the tables on the Kookaburras when they out-shot the Aussies by 3 to 1 in the penalty shuttle after drawing 2-all in regulation time.
It was a bizarre Day 6 of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup as all three games played on that day had to be settled through penalty shoot-outs. It was also the first time in the 24-year history of the tournament that witnessed an all-Oceania final.
The Aussies broke the hearts of their fans when they continued with another lacklustre performance, which was also the reason they lost to India 2-4 the night before.
Fondly called Kookaz, prior to that game against India, they have not suffered a defeat at this Sultan Azlan Shah tournament since 2010.
When the final whistle blew, New Zealand were declared the new Champions, ending Australia’s 2-year winning streak. The Black Sticks were Champions in 2012, the year when Australia failed to make an appearance.
