12,000 Join Final Ipoh Car-Free Day of the Year

Ipohites from all walks of life gathered in droves to participate in the final edition of Ipoh Car-Free Day of 2018.

The event was graced by Perak State ExCo for Tourism, Arts & Culture YB Tan Kar Hing, alongside his colleague for Youth, Sports and Human Capital Development YB Howard Lee; Perak State Assemblywoman for Canning YB Jenny Choy, and Ipoh City Councillors.

According to Ipoh City Council Planning & Development Senior Director, En. Zulqarnain Mohamad, the Ipoh Car-Free Day programme has multiple objectives, including achieving a Sports City status, lower carbon footprint and promote a healthy plus green lifestyle by fostering environmental awareness.
Among the Sustainable Development Goals as stated, to be achieved are:
i. Cities 2030, Cities for All: Implementing the New Urban Agenda (The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum – 7th – 13th February 2018);
ii. Leave No One Behind (National Planning Congress in Conjunction with World Town Planning Day – 29th November 2018);
iii. Our Own Town (Local Authorities Enhancement Convention – 10th – 11th December, 2018).
He added, “This month, the themes for Ipoh Car-Free Day are Sports City, International Day of Disabled Persons, Human Rights Day, Christmas and New Year’s Celebration.”

This programme managed to attract the participation of both the public and private sectors, as well as non-governmental organisations, e.g., PUSPANITA, Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE), BOMBA, Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), Perak State Health Department, KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, MICA, Daybreak Association, Ipoh City Watch, Tun Razak Library and many more.

Among the activities lined up were Ipoh Sports City cycling, PSPA Festive Extravaganza by Perak Society of Performing Arts, Family Go Green Competition, free health checks, green campaign by KOHIJAU-iCycle, etc.

What a year it has been for Ipoh Car-Free Day. See you in 2019!
