Wrapping Up Visit Perak Year 2017: Plans for Perak Tourism in 2018

With Visit Perak Year 2017 coming to a close at midnight, the Perak State Government through Tourism Perak Management Bhd. further intensifies efforts in promoting the state come 2018, with three key focuses:

1) to brand Ipoh as an international city, on par with other Malaysian cities such as Penang and Kuala Lumpur, even Hong Kong and Shanghai;
2) to promote Ipoh among ASEAN counterparts, in line with Tourism Malaysia’s Go ASEAN initiative to attract tourists from ASEAN countries;
3) to attract more domestic tourists – in view of Perak dropping to second place for domestic travellers in 2016, with 7.2 million visitors.

These emphases were conveyed to the press by Perak State Executive Councillor for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Communications and Multimedia YB Dato’ Nolee Ashilin binti Mohammed Radzi at a dinner function hosted at Lost World of Tambun, in appreciation of tourism industry players in the state who had worked tirelessly to make Visit Perak Year 2017 a success, sustaining its global recognition.

In 2016, Ipoh was listed at sixth placing by Lonely Planet as one of the best Asian destinations to visit. This was followed by Perak at number nine among the Top 10 ‘must visit’ regions in 2017 by the same publication.

Despite these international mentions, the state government and private sector did not rest on their laurels and continue to work hard even in the current soft economy.

“We will hold our first workshop for the year in April to discuss with the private sector on how to market Ipoh. Every city needs its own brand and this is a problem that we are facing. Every accolade bestowed has been a benchmark for us and a heavier responsibility to achieve greater excellence,” said Dato’ Nolee.

The event was also graced by the presence of En. Mohd Hizaz bin Mohd Ibrahim (Director Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia) and Pn. Zuraida Md Taib (Chief Executive Officer Tourism Perak).
