Explore the Hidden World: Tasik Cermin 2
Known as a “hidden gem”, Tasik Cermin, or Mirror Lake in English, is located on the fringe of Ipoh City. A former iron ore mining site, Tasik Cermin awaits visitors to explore its hidden world where wilderness meets tranquillity. Tasik Cermin is a stunning eco-tourism attraction that is fast developing with its two serene lakes enveloped by lush greenery, and surrounded by towering karst limestone hills.
It’s no wonder that Tasik Cermin, a doline geosite of Kinta Valley National Geopark, is the 19th geosite to be included in the state’s geopark list. Upon this inclusion, Tasik Cermin has been rebranded as Tasik Cermin Eco Park.
There are two main attractions here, duly named “Tasik Cermin 1” and “Tasik Cermin 2“, for its mirror-like reflections on the water surface. You might wonder which is more interesting. Well, each has its own qualities. In terms of human footfall, though, Tasik Cermin 1 is more popular, simply for the fact that it’s only RM4 entry fee per adult (Malaysian) to walk through the tunnel to reach the platform of Tasik Cermin 1.
On the other hand, the fee for Tasik Cermin 2 is RM25 per person (13 years old and above), as a dinghy is required to navigate through the cave tunnel. The maximum capacity per dinghy is 8 persons, excluding the guide.
According to our guide, Syukri, Tasik Cermin 2 opened to the public in 2021. Similar to the cave tunnel at Tasik Cermin 1, it is manmade. Its length is approximately 120 – 130 metres. The lake is also manmade, as a result of iron ore mining activities in the past. It has a maximum depth of about 27 metres (90 feet). Fishing enthusiasts will be happy to know that there are 6 freshwater fish species here, including Snakehead, Catfish, Soon Hock, and even Arapaima. Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed to fish, well, unless you have special access. Teehee.
The First Lake: Tasik Cermin 1
As mentioned above, Tasik Cermin 1 is accessible by walking through the cave tunnel that has been named the Miner’s Tunnel. Originally a narrow passage in the 1900s, this 90-metre-long Miner’s Tunnel was initially used for a railway track to transport iron ore from the interior. It was later widened for comfortable visitor access, leading to a serene lake. Just for general knowledge, the two lakes are not connected.
Feel free to lepak-lepak at the platform area. However, visitors can opt to take the dinghy out (also RM25 per person 13 years old and above, or RM18 per child 12 years and below) for a 20-minute guided tour of the lake.
Activities at Tasik Cermin
Along with the opportunity for photography and videography, other attractions here besides the two mirror lakes are the Snake Mouth Cave, Monkey Swing Playground and the newest addition, Rocky Sky Ladder with 22 colourful steps into the air. Swimming is strictly prohibited.
