Strengthening Cross-Border Ties: Perak and Southern Thailand Media Collaboration
A 3-day, 2-night media trip to Southern Thailand has paved the way for stronger ties between Ipoh and Hat Yai, two cities with shared interests in tourism, heritage, and media collaboration.
The delegation of approximately 30 media representatives from Perak was led by YDH Toh Amar Pahlawan Datuk Ahmad Hariri bin Kamarudin, Councillor of the Ipoh City Council (MBI)-cum-Chairman of the Council’s Tourism, Arts, Culture & Heritage Sub-Committee.
With twin goals of enhancing communication networks and exploring joint tourism opportunities, the trip was designed to connect the Perak media with their counterparts in Southern Thailand.
Exploring Media Operations at NBT Songkhla
On 21st August 2025, the Perak delegation visited NBT Songkhla TV Station in Hat Yai. They were warmly received by Mr. Pathompong Kaewbandit, Director of the Southern Television Operations Division, and his team.

The group toured the production facilities, news studios, and control rooms, while learning about the station’s operations and content strategies. For the Malaysian media, this was a unique learning experience, since Malaysia does not operate provincial-level television stations like Thailand.

The engagement opened discussions on potential cooperation in programme exchange and cross-border content creation. According to Datuk Ahmad Hariri, this visit offered valuable insights that could inspire future initiatives in local broadcasting within Malaysia.

Forum: Muhibbah Mesra Media Selatan Thailand–Malaysia
The highlight of the trip came the next evening, 22nd August 2025, when the delegation joined their Thai counterparts at the BP Grand Hotel, Hat Yai, for the Program Muhibbah Mesra Media Selatan Thailand–Malaysia.

The event began with a welcoming address by Senator YB Chaiyong Maneerungsakul, President of the Southern Thailand Media Association. A seminar followed, featuring a distinguished panel:
.
The session was moderated by Tuandaniya Meringing, President of the Malaysia University Alumni Association in Thailand (MUAT).

Discussions focused on strengthening media collaboration, enhancing cross-border communication, and developing joint strategies for tourism promotion. Speakers emphasised the critical role of the media as a bridge for spreading accurate information, building trust, and shaping a positive image of both regions.

Tourism as a Shared Vision
Tourism promotion was at the heart of the discussions. Hat Yai, already attracting over 300,000 Malaysian visitors monthly, continues to expand its hotel capacity, adding around 3,000 rooms to meet rising demand. Local tourism thrives on cultural attractions, family-friendly activities, plus health and wellness tourism – areas where Ipoh also sees potential for collaboration.
The concept of an “Ipoh–Hat Yai Twin City Tourism” programme was highlighted, aiming to showcase the best of both destinations through joint promotional packages, cultural festivals, and cross-border events.
Introducing Ipoh’s 3H Tourism Concept
Datuk Ahmad Hariri shared Ipoh’s tourism development approach built on the 3H Concept – Heritage, Hipster, and Health:
1. Heritage: Preserving historic buildings, cultural traditions, and food heritage to strengthen identity and appeal to history enthusiasts.
2. Hipster: Showcasing Ipoh’s modern lifestyle through trendy cafés, creative arts, street culture, and contemporary activities that attract younger travellers.
3. Health: Promoting wellness tourism with public parks, smoke-free zones, green spaces, healthy dining options, and recreational facilities for a cleaner, healthier city.
This concept not only aligns with Ipoh’s urban tourism strategy but also resonates with global travel trends focusing on cultural depth, lifestyle experiences, and wellness.
Media Cooperation and Knowledge Exchange
In addition to tourism, the forum explored ways to strengthen ties in media and communication. Proposed ideas included:
.
These initiatives will deepen professional networks, expand content reach, and enhance mutual understanding between the two nations.
The evening concluded with a dinner, where conversations continued in a more relaxed and friendly setting.
In Line with Perak Sejahtera 2030 and Visit Malaysia 2026
The visit by Perak media to Southern Thailand reflects the ambitions of Perak Sejahtera 2030, particularly under its flagship initiative on the Experience Economy, which prioritises tourism as a key driver of growth. The exchange also sets the stage for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, positioning Ipoh as a vibrant, competitive destination and a gateway for international travellers.
More than a study tour, it was an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn best practices, and strengthen friendships across borders.
From the in-depth tour at NBT Songkhla to the spirited forum at BP Grand Hotel, this courtesy call illustrated the shared vision of Ipoh and Hat Yai as partners in tourism, media, and cultural exchange. As discussions on collaboration continue, this initiative promises to deliver long-term benefits, not only for both cities but for Malaysia and Thailand as close neighbours.
The visit was a true reflection of Muhibbah, bringing communities closer together and shaping a brighter future for regional collaboration.
