Pick Yi Up for Malay, Chinese & Western Cuisines
When we eat as a family or group, it’s inevitable that all of us have our own preference. That’s why one of my favourite eating places is at the food court, where there are more varieties to pick, choose, and even share.
We were told of Pick Yi Up, a 7-month-old café that’s located just down the street from IMP Kitchen, that offers Malay, Chinese and Western cuisines. This is a pork-free outlet and Muslim-friendly, as the eatery is a joint venture-ship between a Malay and a Chinese.
Pick Yi Up’s signature item is its Hong Kong-style crispy roast duck, because one of the owners operates a stall at the food courts in Ipoh Garden and Bercham. As for the rest of the items, we ordered whatever that fancied us.
The duck served in this meal is part of the set lunch, which is available daily from 12 noon until 2.30pm.
There are only six items on the set lunch menu; the others being Ayam Masak Merah, Asam Pedas Ikan (Assam Curry Fish) or Kari Ikan (Curry Fish) / Kari Ayam (Curry Chicken) and Fried Fish.
Besides the main course, set lunch comes with a plate of white rice, vegetables and a glass of iced orange cordial.
So, what was our opinion? The roast duck was on point; with thin, crispy skin. The meat was tender, made softer with its soy sauce, and only had a slight gamey taste, luckily.
We also ordered nasi lemak. Its Malay-style sambal was heavenly – spicy but not to the point of being torturous. The sambal lifted up the overall flavour of the nasi lemak.
Fish & Chips is obviously from the Western menu. With two large slabs of fish fillet, it’s good on its own, or accompanied by a side dish.
Talking about side dish, the curry chicken was from that same menu. While the above items are hits, this is a slight miss.
For a bowl for one pax, there were only two bony pieces of chicken, without potato cubes, i.e., this was supposed to be potato curry chicken.
Tastewise was passable but presentation-wise, it was a miss. It didn’t look appealing at all. More effort should be given to plating, don’t you think so?
Have you been to Pick Yi Up yet? How was your experience?
