Pertandingan Seni Suara & Gaya Burung Botani (April 2023)

The monthly Pertandingan Seni Suara & Gaya Burung Botani was a lively event, despite it being hosted during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslim hobbyists are fasting.

The three species of birds that competed on Sunday were Merbah Jambul (Bulbul), Murai Batu (White-rumped shama), and Murai Kampung (Oriental magpie-robin). Each category attracted an average of 30 entries, along with enthusiasts from neighbouring states such as Penang and Selangor, and as far north as Kedah. Of course, birdkeepers from other towns within Perak did not lose the opportunity to attend the natural musical extravaganza performed by these songbirds.

Organised by Soo Hoo Kok Weng since January 2023, this bird contest has once again brought together birdkeepers from near and far, following the COVID-19 pandemic that temporarily halted all birding activities for these hobbyists. This monthly activity is supported by Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara (PERHILITAN), Persatuan Seni Suara Dan Gaya Burung Bon Botani Ipoh, Kelab Burung Merbah & Murai Utara, KS Bird Farm, and Bon Manjung Lumut.

As the number of entries per bird species was manageable, there was only one judge per species. The three judges were tasked not only to evaluate the birds’ singing ability and melodious voice but also each bird’s physical appearance, behaviour, individuality, and health.

Top scorers were presented with trophies, while all birds received a certificate of participation. By the end of the year, when all monthly winners are tabulated, the birds, one per species, that have won the most times after competing in the past 12 months, will be declared the “Grand Champion of the Year 2023”.
