There was a ballet performance, followed by a 40-member choir from the combined English speaking churches of Ipoh, a traditional Christian performance with dancing and singing in Bahasa Malaysia (national language) by orang asli (natives of Malaysia) from a church in Gopeng, Perak. It was truly a 1Malaysia affair as it was followed by a performance by a 50-member choir from the combined Tamil churches of Ipoh.

According to the emcee of the evening, the highlight of the event is a mini concert by a band called This Sanctuary who flew in directly from Sydney, Australia to perform in Ipoh as part of the Malaysia Tour, though I have no information on where else the band would be performing in Malaysia. There are five members in the group, Renee Sieff, Ben Tan, Sam Irish, Sammy Sudhakar and Brendan Tan. Their first EP titled “Maybe You Weren’t Meant To Get It” will be released sometime in April, 2011.

I thought that it was pretty cool that a young Christian band was brought in to liven things up further. It was certainly unexpected for a State-level event. Even though the dignitaries left the venue at 10.30pm, This Sanctuary continued to play at the Stadium to close the event. The younger set of people seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Even so, I thought it would be way more meaningful if a local band, particularly from Perak, was given such an opportunity to perform in an event of this magnitude.

Shooting photos for this post was extremely challenging because of the spotlights. Once the performance began, the lights were dimmed, you see, and suddenly I felt that I shouldn’t have opted for a compact, handy digital camera. It doesn’t seem adequate anymore. I thought that shooting Amber Chia would be tough but that’s nothing compared to this Christmas 2010 and New Year 2011 celebrations!

Anyway, I regret that I don’t even have one good photo or video of This Sanctuary to share on my blog. However, if you would like to know what good stuff you missed last evening, check This Sanctuary’s YouTube Channel.
