Lalaland: Ipoh’s Newest Container-Concept Café Opens

Launched by Ipoh City Mayor Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi bin Baharin@Md Daud this afternoon, Lalaland is finally ready to open its doors to customers on Valentine’s Day 2023. Offering an Americanised menu with wings, tenders, and drumsticks that are flavoured by in-house sauces, Lalaland is set to be Ipoh’s primary lepak port among buddies. Besides chicken parts, other items on the menu include coleslaw, waffles, fries and salad. Lalaland is Muslim-friendly. Halal certification is in progress.

While the menu was inspired by Wing Zone, the name Lalaland was adopted from the musical romance film, La La Land. Founded by Joseph Choy and Mark Chong, Lalaland took about four months to complete, from the time the idea was conceptualised.

According to Mark, the creative brains behind the café, “I actually had this idea long before but the pandemic paused my plans. Shortly after that, I met Joseph and shared with him this vision of bringing a fun vibe back to Ipoh and he was receptive. The cost of building Lalaland is approximately RM1 million.”

7 units on 40-foot shipping containers make up Lalaland. This café can accommodate some 200 customers at any one time, upstairs and downstairs, indoors and outdoors. Lalaland may be a new kid on the block in Ipoh’s F&B scene but there are plenty of additions to the café in due time, which will include an outdoor cinema, sports live stream, cat playground, and event space, just to name a few.
