Halia Inc. Restaurant & Coffee Bar, Melaka
The interestingly named Halia Inc. is a new restaurant and coffee bar right in the centre of Melaka’s tourist hub, in front of the waterwheel landmark. Owned by the proprietors of Quayside Hotel, which is located just next door, it has also been renovated from the 100-year-old Customs Warehouse.
The partner of the restaurant, Stuart, told me that the name ‘halia’ came about because he thought the word was intriguing. Being a foreigner, he naturally, only heard of this word when he set foot in Melaka two years ago.
Interestingly, ‘halia’, which is the Malay word for ‘ginger’ is most apt for a restaurant as ginger is one of the most commonly used ingredients in cooking.
Halia Inc., which has been in operation since early May, is open for business daily from 7am to 11pm, serving a variety of food, from contemporary Western cuisine, Mediterranean and South East Asian. Guests of Quayside Hotel get to enjoy their complimentary breakfast here.
Similar to Quayside Hotel, it has adopted an industrial design set-up. Being a heritage building, the owners had to maintain its facade and they have done a good job.
The restaurant, which has seating that caters to different preferences, has tables that offer city or river view, indoor or outdoor. It can also accommodate private functions for large groups of diners, for up to 150 pax (my estimation).
