Comedy Nite LOL Ipoh #03

Ipoh’s English-language standup comedy scene is heating up and local standup comedians are on a roll. Hot off the success of SRJK Ipoh Mali Comedy, the jokers were at it again, also with DJ Damian Nagalingam on the decks, spinning the beats.

Hosted at Weil Hotel’s The Deck Gastro Bar, which is striving to be the city’s default standup comedy venue, Comedy Nite LOL Ipoh #03 was headlined by Stephen Fernando, a seasoned comedian specially invited from the Klang Valley, though he was born and bred in Taiping.

Stephen Fernando is a 5-time Toastmasters International District Champion and International Speech Champion two times.

Opening the show was up-and-coming Rizal Fauzi, who is getting better and better with his material and delivery since his first public performance at the JKR (Jom Ketawa Ramai-ramai) Live Comedy Show a year ago.

Despite just being on stage two weeks ago for SRJK Ipoh Mali Comedy, Rizal was able to improvise some of his jokes to avoid similarity, so that those who attended both shows could still have a jolly good time.

Next on stage was the ever-popular professional emcee, KT Pillai, whose wish list is to create a vibrant standup comedy scene in Ipoh. With the support of Ipohites to attend every show presented, it will happen sooner or later.

KT, who was also one of the comedians at the SRJK Ipoh Mali Comedy, brought with him this time his TV8 “hamsup” newscaster persona, which he created a decade ago. He weaved humour into his news-style presentation on the “Uncensored News Channel”, to bring the house down.

His skit was followed by “regular” standup, where he literally stood up, versus sitting down as the newscaster.

Saving the best for last, up came the pro-comedian, Stephen Fernando. Poking fun that Indians can talk non-stop, he really did go on and on in a conversational manner, and even made a joke out of forgetting his lines, when he did forget. Kudos to him for his professionalism, at the age of 77!
